The elite squad known as the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit cast is in for a shakeup.
Michele Fazekas, a writer and now showrunner for the long-running NBC drama, hinted that the show is returning to its original style. Star Mariska Hargitay’s character, Olivia Benson, will be investigating a particularly complex and intriguing case.
She recently told *People* magazine that she’s revisiting the successful approach she took during seasons 3 through 7 of the show. “I’m remembering what worked well back then and bringing some of those elements back,” she explained.
Fazekas mentioned that the new season, starting September 25th, will have a few adjustments and will present Benson with challenges she hasn’t faced recently.
“In a great way,” the executive producer added, “we’re giving her something to push against.”
The show might bring back Christopher Meloni, who previously starred on *SVU*. His character, Elliot Stabler, now investigates crimes in the *Law & Order: Organized Crime* spin-off. Meloni shared photos in August showing him with Dann Florek-a former cast member who played Captain Donald Cragen and left the original series in 2015-suggesting Florek may also return.
As the actor captioned the behind-the-scenes snapshots, “Hangin with friends on a Friday nite.”
Okay, so Benson and Stabler were *always* just partners, right? Chris Meloni was on *SVU* for twelve seasons and they kept it professional. But honestly? Mariska Hargitay has hinted she’d *love* to see them finally get together! I mean, the chemistry was always there, and as a huge fan, I’m totally here for it. It would be epic!
She jokingly suggested on a July episode of the *Call Her Daddy* podcast that the couple should get together on the final episode.
Mariska Hargitay, the star of the show since it began in 1999, said, “If the timing and story feel right, we’ll consider it.” She added that they’ll make a decision when the time comes.
