The DCU Just Dropped a Bombshell About Man of Tomorrow (& Changed Its Main Character for Good)

Now you can watch *Superman* on HBO Max! This gives fans who missed it in theaters a chance to see James Gunn’s first DC Universe film. All the excitement of the movie remains, and David Corenswet is just as compelling to watch at home. It’s surprising to think this iconic character might take a secondary role so soon, but that’s the path Gunn is taking. The next film, *Man of Tomorrow*, will focus on Lex Luthor, who makes a strong debut in this new DC Universe.

Lex Luthor remains a ruthless villain in *Superman*, demonstrated by his cold-blooded killing of a man who tried to help Superman. While he’s ultimately caught by the authorities at the film’s conclusion, it appeared his story was over until he reappeared in *Man of Tomorrow*. James Gunn has now delivered on his promise of a surprising twist in the latest episode of *Peacemaker*.

Rick Flag Sr. Gets Inside the Mind of a Villain in Peacemaker Season 2

Rick Flag Jr. seems to be repeating Amanda Waller’s mistakes. Driven by a desire for revenge against Peacemaker – the man who killed his son – he’s using the search for Peacemaker’s Quantum Unfolding Chamber as a pretext. In Season 2, Episode 6, with Peacemaker still at large, Flag turns to Lex for help, hoping his knowledge of pocket universes can provide a solution. This leads Flag to Belle Reeve for a tense meeting with the diminished villain, who now uses a cane following his battle with Krypto at the end of *Superman*.

Lex isn’t happy with his time at Belle Reeve, largely because his cellmates – two metahumans – are constantly affectionate. When Flag visits, Lex tries to make a deal: he’ll reveal how to locate Peacemaker’s portal if Flag releases him. Although desperate, Flag refuses to free Lex, offering instead a transfer to Van Kull Prison, which is located in Metropolis according to the comics. While still being imprisoned isn’t ideal, Lex is resourceful and well-connected, so he sees this as an opportunity.

Lex Luthor Will Be in Prime Position to Torment Superman When Man of Tomorrow Kicks Off

It’s unclear if Lex Luthor will appear in Season 2 of *Peacemaker*. Amanda Waller might have to visit him again if the tracking device fails or if they need to revise their agreement. However, even without another visit, the show has already laid the groundwork for *Man of Tomorrow*. James Gunn has confirmed a looming threat will force Lex and Superman to team up, but it seems unlikely Superman would willingly release his greatest enemy from prison. A more probable outcome is that Lex will exploit a major disaster in Metropolis to escape and reduce his sentence.

Lex Luthor won’t be operating at his best, which will be difficult for him considering he’s facing a powerful alien. To compensate, he’ll need to use his signature power suit, the one seen in all the *Man of Tomorrow* images. Nicholas Hoult’s surprising appearance as his character in *Peacemaker* is so distracting that it’s hard to follow what he’s saying, or how it connects to the upcoming *Superman* movie. Still, everything he says is important, because he’s poised to become as crucial to the DC Universe as Superman himself.
