A little over a year ago, Marvel Studios surprised everyone with two big announcements about the next *Avengers* movie: the introduction of Doctor Doom, and the return of Robert Downey Jr. – this time to play the villain! Many were stunned, as Downey Jr. had left the Marvel Cinematic Universe after his character, Iron Man, died in *Avengers: Endgame* back in 2019. With filming now complete and the movie scheduled for release next year, excitement is really starting to grow. A former Marvel colleague recently shared their thoughts on Downey Jr.’s casting, and their reaction might be even more thrilling than any hints or previews we’ve seen so far.
While promoting his new movie, *Play Dirty*, Shane Black discussed Robert Downey Jr.’s potential role in a hypothetical *Avengers: Doomsday* film. Black and Downey Jr. have a strong working relationship, having collaborated on *Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang* (2005) and *Iron Man 3* (2013), with Black also writing and directing the latter. As a longtime comic book enthusiast, Black shared his perspective on what Downey Jr.’s involvement could signify.
Honestly, I think this new movie is going to completely shake up the superhero genre. At first, I was a little skeptical – it seemed like they were relying too much on a familiar hero. But I truly believe it’s going to be amazing. I can’t say anything specific about what I’ve heard, but I’m so excited! I’m already planning to be first in line on opening day. I haven’t even bothered with most of the recent Marvel films, but this one? This one I absolutely have to see first.
As Black pointed out, people had similar reactions when Robert Downey Jr. was first cast. Marvel Studios has struggled since the release of *Avengers: Endgame*, with few films succeeding and many receiving criticism for their quality. This has caused Marvel to rethink its overall approach and ultimately change its plans for future *Avengers* movies.
While some might think bringing back Robert Downey Jr. is a familiar move, his appearances consistently draw audiences and he always delivers a strong performance. Recent box office numbers show Marvel needs a hit – only two of their films have earned over a billion dollars in the last five years, compared to six in the previous five. Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom could be exactly what they need to turn things around.
Even if this idea seemed simple at first, it could prove to be incredibly helpful for Marvel Studios, especially when they really need a win. While not all fans are on board yet, director Shane Black is already excited about the potential.
Black’s new film, Play Dirty, premieres on Prime Video on October 1st.
