Proof the Fourth Wing TV Show Is Full Steam Ahead

Fourth Wing is ready to soar.

It turns out author Rebecca Yarros has announced a significant new member of the TV team: Meredith Averill will be the showrunner, bringing the romantasy novel to life as an Amazon Prime series.

Yarros excitedly announced the new team member on Instagram on Sept. 24, posting, “Welcome to the team, Meredith Averill!

She went on to say, “I truly admire all the work this amazing woman has done, and I’m thrilled she’s now part of the team.” She added, “It’s incredible to see such a talented group of people working on the show! Let’s get started!”

What kind of stories will Averill tell? She has a strong background as an executive producer on popular shows like Wednesday, The Haunting of Hill House, and Jane the Virgin. She also worked as a producer on The Good Wife.

Fourth Wing-the initial book in the The Empyrean trilogy-tells the story of Violet Sorrengail. Her mother, a general, commands her to train as a dragon rider in the kingdom of Navarre. Though Violet, at 20 years old, was preparing for a quiet life as a scribe, she’s thrown into the rigorous and dangerous environment of Basgiath War College, where she must overcome challenging tests and intense combat training.

Averill is taking over from Moira Walley-Beckett-the creator of Anne With an E and a writer for Breaking Bad-who left the project in July, despite having agreed to join it back in July 2024.

Furthermore, Michael B. Jordan-whose production company, Outlier Society, is working on the series with Amazon-will also be an executive producer. Elizabeth Raposo, the president of Outlier Society, will also serve in that role, alongside the author, Yarros.

Rebecca Yarros, the author of Iron Flame and Onyx Storm, expressed her excitement about seeing her book adapted for the screen. In an October 2023 Instagram post, she wrote, “I’m so humbled and thrilled.”

They are a truly exceptional team, and I’m so excited to see their version of Fourth Wing come to life! I completely believe in them,” she added. “Oh my goodness, I’m also executive producing! I can’t even begin to express how thrilled and thankful I am to collaborate with such wonderful people!”

For Yarros-who tied the knot with Bush Hager in 2002-the thrilling and passionate story in Fourth Wing was inspired by her strong affection for romance novels.

She told Elle in January that her fondness for romance novels stems from a long-lasting love story. “I’ve loved the same man since I was 19,” she shared. “He’s the one for me. We have six children. But reading romance allows me to experience that feeling of falling in love repeatedly – it triggers the same chemicals in my brain.”

Even though I have a really good marriage, I can still enjoy a romance novel and feel good because of the endorphins it releases,” she explained. “Romance novels offer a wonderful space for women to express their desires, define what they deserve, and imagine what healthy relationships should be like.”

Since it first aired in 2019, The Morning Show has consistently been a major success in the streaming landscape. This is largely due to the incredible acting from its leads, including Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Billy Crudup, all of whom have received Emmy nominations for their work on the Apple TV+ series. The show, which is inspired by Brian Stelter‘s 2013 book Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV, offers a look behind the scenes of morning television. The FX series is based on Laurence Leamer‘s 2021 book, Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era, and features a stellar cast including Naomi Watts, Diane Lane, Chloë Sevigny, Calista Flockhart, Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald and the late Treat Williams. The second season received 10 Emmy nominations in 2024, with acting nominations for Hollander, Watts, Williams and Lane.

The 2023 series Fellow Travelers is based on the 2008 novel of the same name by Thomas Mallon. It follows Hawkins Fuller (Matt Bomer) and Timothy Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey) and their complex relationship over several decades, from the 1950s through the 1980s. Both actors received Emmy nominations in 2024 for their work on the Showtime miniseries: Matt Bomer was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, and Jonathan Bailey for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

At the end of 2020, Netflix turned Julia Quinn‘s romance novels into the series Bridgerton, and it quickly became a huge cultural hit. What made it so popular? The show featured a diverse group of actors, a fantastic soundtrack, and some passionate scenes, keeping viewers hooked. Bridgerton was also well-received by critics, even earning a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series at the 2021 Emmy Awards.

This drama, packed with grand battles and a tragic love story, is adapted from the well-known book series by George R.R. Martin. The books are popular on their own, but the TV show has attracted a global fanbase, even including people who weren’t previously fans of the original stories. Throughout its eight seasons, the HBO series won an impressive 58 Emmy Awards – more than any other drama ever. Though the ending remains a point of debate among viewers – it moved beyond Martin’s original plans to create its own conclusion – the show is widely considered one of the greatest of all time.

HBO’s version of Liane Moriarty‘s popular novel brought big names to television, featuring Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz and Laura Dern as the five women at the center of a murder mystery. The first season was just as captivating as the book and won eight Primetime Emmy Awards. It even convinced Meryl Streep to join the cast for a key part in season two, which Liane Moriarty also helped create even though there wasn’t a book to base it on. While not quite as popular as the first season, the second season still earned nominations for Streep and Dern for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

3 Body Problem received six Emmy nominations for 2024, including recognition as an Outstanding Drama Series. This Netflix series, which takes place in both the U.K. and China, centers around scientists investigating an extraterrestrial puzzle and a potential planetary threat. The show is adapted from Liu Cixin‘s book series Remembrance of Earth’s Past, which began in 2006 with The Three-Body Problem. Cixin continued the series with The Dark Forest in 2008 and Death’s End in 2010.

The British spy thriller Slow Horses originally launched on Apple TV+ in 2022, but it was the show’s third season that really caught the attention of Emmy voters in 2024, earning nine nominations-including Outstanding Drama Series. Stars Gary Oldman and Jack Lowden also received nominations for Lead Actor and Supporting Actor, respectively. The series is adapted from Mick Herron‘s Slough House spy novels, beginning with Slow Horses, which was first published in 2010. The book series currently has eight installments, with the newest, Bad Actors, released in 2023.

Palm Royale received three Emmy nominations in 2024: Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Kristen Wiig, and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Carol Burnett. While the Apple TV+ show is inspired by the 2018 book Mr. & Mrs. American Pie by Juliet McDaniel, it takes significant liberties with the original story. The series, set in the late 1960s, centers on Kristen Wiig’s character, Maxine Simmons, a former beauty queen trying to enter the exclusive world of Palm Beach high society. In contrast, the book portrays Maxine as being sent into exile in Scottsdale, Arizona, from Palm Springs after a disruptive, drunken incident at Thanksgiving when she learns her husband is leaving her for his secretary.

Lily Gladstone received an Emmy nomination in 2024 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her work in Hulu’s 2024 miniseries Under The Bridge. The series is based on the 2005 true crime book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey. The show tells the story of the 1997 murder of 14-year-old Reena Virk by eight classmates in Saanich, British Columbia, Canada.

The 2024 The Sympathizer is a darkly comedic historical series adapted from Viet Thanh Nguyen‘s 2015 novel, which won the Pulitzer Prize. This HBO show is set towards the end of the Vietnam War and follows a Vietnamese spy as he escapes to a refugee camp in the U.S. There, his allegiance is questioned while he secretly continues sending information to the Viet Cong. At the 2024 Emmys, Robert Downey Jr. won an award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his performance, having played five different characters throughout the series.

First shown on Hulu in 2017, this series is based on Margaret Atwood‘s 1985 dystopian novel. It’s set in the totalitarian nation of Gilead after a Second American Civil War. The show has continued the story of June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) – the main character, a woman forced into servitude – and her fight for freedom, even though it’s now moved beyond the plot of the original book. It has received numerous Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series during its first season.

This remarkable mini-series began as an adaptation of the 1976 novel Alex Haley‘s Roots: The Saga of an American Family. The following year, Roots, featuring LeVar Burton, debuted on ABC and quickly became a major cultural event, earning nine Emmy Awards and a prestigious Peabody Award. It achieved exceptionally high viewership, with the final episode remaining the second-most-watched series finale ever in U.S. television history. In 2016, a new version of the story, also called Roots, premiered with Malachi Kirby and Anika Noni Rose in leading roles.

This captivating drama features unique characters like a mind-reading waitress and vampires who speak with southern drawls. The series stars real-life couple Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, and is inspired by The Southern Vampire Mysteries novels written by Charlaine Harris. The story unfolds in a small Louisiana town. After seven seasons, the show concluded in 2014, but we’ll always appreciate it for giving us the unforgettable sight of Alexander Skarsgård and Joe Manganiello without their clothes.

This U.K. series offers a fresh look at the classic detective stories by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, the show became incredibly popular not just in the U.K., but internationally-it even earned the award for Best Television Film at the 2016 Emmys in the U.S.

This thrilling series, inspired by the historical fiction novels of Diana Gabaldon, features time travel, a fight against the established order, and a complicated romance. Caitriona Balfe stars as a nurse who unexpectedly finds herself transported to another era, where she develops feelings for a rebellious Scottish warrior (Sam Heughan) even though she’s already married back in her own time.

The miniseries The Undoing, based on the 2014 novel You Should Have Known by Jean Hanff Korelitz, once again stars Nicole Kidman as the central figure in a murder mystery. The story focuses on Grace Fraser (Kidman), a therapist whose life is disrupted when her husband, Jonathan (Hugh Grant), becomes a suspect in the murder of Elena Alves (Matilda De Angelis).

Although the ending of the show sparked mixed reactions, viewers universally praised Kidman’s fantastic outfits throughout the series.

The crime drama centered around Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), who leads a double life as a blood spatter analyst and a serial killer, initially came from novels written by Jeff Lindsay. During its eight-season run on Showtime, the show developed a dedicated fanbase and received 23 Emmy Award nominations. However, the final episode? Well, it’s safe to say that ending things perfectly is always a challenge.

In 2021, the creators revisited Dexter’s storyline with a short, self-contained series called Dexter: New Blood. This was a second attempt to conclude his story.

The critically acclaimed Netflix series is inspired by Piper Kerman‘s memoir, Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison, and quickly became popular with audiences. Viewers especially enjoyed the show’s blend of witty humor and emotional stories, along with its compelling female characters, such as Crazy Eyes Suzanne (Uzo Aduba), Sophia (Laverne Cox), Pennsatucky (Taryn Manning), and the fan favorite Poussey Washington (Samira Wiley). The show concluded after seven seasons, with viewers saying goodbye to Litchfield in 2019.

Before Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) became a TV icon, this show actually started as a movie with Billy Bob Thornton playing the same character. However, it was in 2006 when author H.G. Bissinger‘s non-fiction book, Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream, was adapted for television that it really captured audiences – even those who weren’t football fans. Alongside Chandler, the series featured Connie Britton, Minka Kelly, Scott Porter, Michael B. Jordan, and, of course, everyone’s beloved rebel, Taylor Kitsch as Tim Riggins. Now, let’s all say it together: “Clear Eyes, Full Hearts…”

Here’s another adaptation of a Liane Moriarty story! In 2021, Nicole Kidman and David E. Kelley teamed up again to create a series based on Moriarty’s 2018 novel, Nine Perfect Strangers. The show premiered on Hulu and centers around Masha Dmitrichenko (Kidman), a wellness expert who aims to change the lives of nine… well, strangers! These include Frances (Melissa McCarthy), Lars (Luke Evans), Tony (Bobby Cannavale), Carmel (Regina Hall), Napoleon (Michael Shannon), Jessica (Samara Weaving), Ben (Melvin Gregg), Heather (Asher Keddie) and Zoe (Grace Van Patten).

This show, adapted from the books by Cecily von Ziegesar, who grew up on the Upper East Side, quickly became well-known for portraying the hidden world of wealthy young people in New York City. If you were rooting for Blair (Leighton Meester) or Serena (Blake Lively), you probably felt a little envious of the stylish cast throughout the show’s six seasons on The CW.

The popular book series by author Sara Shepard became a go-to show for anyone who loved to binge-watch. The show’s fashionable group of friends included Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, Ashley Benson and Troian Bellisario, who consistently kept viewers guessing. After seven seasons on Freeform, PLL attempted to resolve all the mysteries and answer the questions of its dedicated fanbase as the series concluded. Whether fans were happy with those resolutions is a different matter.

The SyFy drama The Magicians brings the fantastical world of Lev Grossman‘s beloved books to life, focusing on students at Brakebills University. These characters deal with common college struggles – difficult relationships and substance abuse – but with the added pressure of mastering their magical abilities, making things even more complex. Throughout its five seasons, the stakes continually rose, often requiring the heroes to save the entire multiverse or magic itself. (Quite a task, wouldn’t you say?) However, one thing remained consistent: each season included a truly memorable musical episode.

The attractive cast, featuring Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Kat Graham, and Ian Somerhalder, played a significant role in making this show a success on The CW. Those who enjoyed the original book series by L. J. Smith were pleased to see their beloved characters brought to life in this drama, which concluded in 2017 after eight seasons.
