7 Upcoming Romantasy Movies & TV Shows You Need To Be Excited About (Netflix Already Spent Millions on #2)

As a huge cinema fan, I’ve been watching with excitement as the world of “romantasy” – that’s romance mixed with fantasy – explodes in popularity. It really took off thanks to #BookTok and the massive success of the A Court of Thorns and Roses series. Honestly, with everything going on, it makes total sense that people are craving these immersive high fantasy novels with, let’s just say, heated romance. So it’s not surprising at all that Hollywood has noticed and is already developing several of the biggest romantasy titles for the big and small screen!

Here are 7 popular “romantasy” novels that are currently being adapted into highly anticipated TV series and films:

7) Ninth House

Among the more realistic books on our list, Ninth House takes place at a familiar location: Yale University. However, when Alex Stern, a young woman with a difficult past, unexpectedly receives a full scholarship to the prestigious school, she’s given a strange job – to keep an eye on the university’s secret societies and investigate those who are practicing dark magic and raising the dead. Author Stephen King praised Ninth House, the first in a planned two-book series featuring Alex Stern, calling it “the best fantasy novel I’ve read in years.”

Author Leigh Bardugo has experience with Hollywood adaptations – her young adult series, Shadow and Bone, became a Netflix show. That’s why we’re looking forward to seeing how Amazon Prime will bring the more realistic and mature setting of the Ninth House to life in a TV adaptation.

6) Plated Prisoner

Those who enjoy fantasy and stories based on Greek mythology are especially excited about the upcoming TV series based on the six-book Plated Prisoner series. It offers a fresh take on the classic tale of King Midas – the man famous for turning everything he touched into gold. But these novels center around Auren, a teenage girl who *is* Midas’s “precious” – she’s made entirely of gold, except for her eyes and teeth. As war threatens, she embarks on a bold journey to find her independence and break free from the King’s power.

Several months ago, Mandalay Television revealed that Kate Rorick would be the showrunner for the series adaptation. Considering her writing experience on shows such as The Librarians and Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger, we’re confident that Auren and her elaborate world are in capable hands.

5) From Blood and Ash

Amazon Prime is expanding its content by adapting the From Blood and Ash book series into a television show. This captivating and passionate fantasy novel centers on Poppy, who is destined from birth to restore her ruined kingdom. However, Poppy longs for a relationship with her protector, Hawke, and the forbidden connection between them sparks a series of dramatic, world-altering events.

We’re really excited to see Jennifer L. Armentrout’s intricately developed world brought to life on screen, and we’re curious to find out who they’ll cast as the character Hawke when the series launches on Prime Video. We can’t wait!

4) Alchemised

Inspired by a popular Harry Potter fanfiction on TikTok, Alchemised tells the story of Helena, who is held captive as part of the Resistance in a world filled with both necromancy and alchemy. The people holding her send her to the home of some very powerful necromancers, hoping they can find out the Resistance’s secrets by reading her mind.

The movie rights to the book were sold to Legendary for around $3 million after a competitive and heated auction, which means the studio is planning a major effort to adapt Helena’s story-a tale that’s both dark and romantic-for the screen.

3) Powerless

Amazon MGM quickly secured the rights to adapt the Powerless trilogy, a story set in a world where individuals with special abilities are considered the Elites, and those without, the Ordinary, are outcasts. Paedyn Gray is one of the Ordinary, but her life changes when she rescues a prince while pretending to be psychic. This act unexpectedly thrusts her into a challenging competition against powerful Elites – despite having no abilities herself – and she also begins to fall in love with the prince, who is unaware of her true, powerless nature.

Viewers who loved The Hunger Games and Divergent are likely to be really excited about Powerless when it premieres on television in the near future.

2) Quicksilver

In a competitive battle between film studios, Netflix paid a seven-figure sum to acquire the rights to Callie Hart’s Quicksilver. The story follows 24-year-old Saeris Fane as she’s thrust into the world of the Fae-creatures once believed to exist only in myth-and becomes connected to Kingfisher, a captivating but troubled fae warrior. Despite his questionable history and difficult personality, Kingfisher is Saeris’s only hope of returning home.

Netflix has experience with fantasy series, as seen in their versions of shows like The Witcher. We’re looking forward to seeing what they do with a story told from a woman’s perspective, and how much effort they put into it.

1) Fourth Wing

I was absolutely captivated by Empyrean, and it all begins with Fourth Wing! It’s a truly breathtaking, fantastical story that centers around Violet Sorrengail. She’s always been quiet and a bit delicate, but her mother – a powerful military general – insists she become a dragon rider, especially with their kingdom facing war. Honestly, watching Violet try to survive at Basgiath War College was on the edge of my seat! And as she fights to make it through each day, I started to feel like she was right to suspect that the people in charge were hiding something truly awful.

Now that Locke & Key’s Meredith Averill is leading the creative side of Amazon’s new TV show, we’re excited to see that this series – packed with dragons and political twists – remains a key focus for the streaming service.
