October 2025 is shaping up to be a great month for science fiction fans, with plenty of new films and TV shows on the way. The month will feature three of the year’s most eagerly awaited movies, plus two animated series that are generating a lot of buzz. And to make things even better, these releases cover a wide range of sci-fi subgenres, promising something for everyone. It’s a diverse lineup that’s sure to please!
Lots of popular franchises, such as Disney and Star Wars, have new releases this month. However, we’re especially looking forward to films by highly respected directors – true creative leaders like Yorgos Lanthimos and Guillermo del Toro. It’s going to be a great month for cinema! We can’t wait!
October 2025 Sci-Fi Movies Will Be a Feast for the Eyes

Three science fiction movies are scheduled to come out in October 2025 and could all be strong contenders for awards: TRON: Ares from Disney, Frankenstein from Netflix , and Bugonia from Focus Features.
TRON: Ares brings the famous digital universe from the 1982 and 2010 movies back to life on October 10th. Jared Leto stars as Ares, a very advanced Program sent to the actual world with a risky assignment. Although Leto has recently been a subject of debate, we’re tentatively hopeful about the film’s potential, especially considering its impressive supporting actors. Jeff Bridges will reprise his role as Kevin Flynn, and he’ll be alongside Greta Lee, Gillian Anderson, Evan Peters, Cameron Monaghan, and Jodie Turner-Smith. With such a talented cast and Nine Inch Nails composing the music, we believe TRON: Ares has the potential to be more than just a typical big-budget movie, and it might even earn some awards recognition for its technical brilliance and music.
Guillermo del Toro’s long-awaited film, Frankenstein, will first play in select theaters starting October 17th, and then become available on Netflix November 7th. The movie seems to be a strong return to form for the acclaimed director, and it’s already receiving positive reviews for both its stunning visuals and the actors’ performances at film festivals. Reviewers are noting that del Toro’s take on Mary Shelley’s classic story is among the most accurate adaptations yet, and many believe it could become a modern classic. Frankenstein is best experienced in cinemas before it streams on Netflix, allowing audiences to fully appreciate the grandeur of del Toro’s vision.
Don’t forget about Bugonia, coming out on October 31st! This dark and funny sci-fi movie is probably the most realistic of the three films being released this month. It reunites director Yorgos Lanthimos with Emma Stone, who plays a powerful CEO (Stone) kidnapped by two conspiracy theorists (Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis). They believe she’s an alien trying to destroy the world. We anticipate Lanthimos will use the sci-fi setting to create a sharp and thought-provoking commentary on society in Bugonia, making it a great choice for Halloween viewing.
Animated Sci-Fi Will Dominate TV

October kicks off with a bang on streaming services thanks to the release of the sixth and final season of Solar Opposites. All episodes will be available on Hulu starting October 13th, and we plan to watch them all to see how the story of this hilarious animated alien family in America ends – including the fate of the tiny civilization they control. Solar Opposites offers a welcome bit of fun, especially since the recent sci-fi movies have been more intense and dramatic. We’re excited for a good mix of laughs and heartwarming moments in this quirky alien adventure.
October brings back one of the most distinctive and captivating shows within the Star Wars franchise: Star Wars: Visions. It’s a collection of animated shorts, each offering a fresh perspective on the intricate world and stories of Star Wars through different cultural viewpoints (particularly inspired by anime). Season 3 premieres on October 29th, featuring nine new shorts created by nine unique Japanese animation studios. The voice cast is impressive too, including Anna Sawai, Freddie Highmore, George Takei, Harvey Guillén, Jodie Turner-Smith, Judith Light, Simu Liu, Stephanie Hsu, and Steve Buscemi. Star Wars: Visions offers a wonderfully concise, yet deeply engaging, viewing experience, and the anime aesthetic beautifully enriches the broader Star Wars universe.
