1998 Fighting Game Secretly Re-Released After 27 Years With Rollback Netcode

Fighting games haven’t always appealed to a wide audience, but the ones that really succeed become timeless classics. A great example is Street Fighter II, which continues to be remembered fondly. Recently, C. Viper, a character first appearing in Street Fighter IV, generated buzz when Capcom revealed she’d be included in Street Fighter VI, and now another announcement has fighting game enthusiasts thrilled. SNK and Code Mystics have brought back a beloved series with a surprise new release, updating it for today’s players. This isn’t the first time Code Mystics has given a classic fighting game a fresh makeover, so fans are eager to see the improvements they’ve made to this title.

Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers first came out in 1998 and is now available on Steam for the first time after 27 years. It’s even been verified to work well on the Steam Deck, but that’s not all players have to look forward to. A major improvement is the addition of Rollback Netcode, which is considered one of the best ways to experience fighting games. This technology ensures a smooth connection between players, almost completely removing input lag and buffering.

As a longtime fan, I’m really excited to see the massive character roster from Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers make a comeback! It’s awesome to be able to play as all the classics again, like Terry Bogard, Mai Shiranui, Blue Mary, Duck King, and so many others. And of course, there are some new faces too – Rick Strowd and Li Xiangfei – plus a secret character, Alfred, which is always fun to discover. To top it all off, they’ve added a new gallery mode with 59 pieces of artwork featuring the whole cast. It’s a great way to celebrate this game!

Another new addition is a completely redesigned lobby system. It can handle up to 9 players and provides various tournament styles for Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers. This makes it easier than ever for multiple players to connect and play this game together.

This unexpected release comes after Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, which has been well-received and marked a strong return for the series. Players can find this game on several platforms, but Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers is currently only available on PC. Despite being more limited in where you can play it, it costs just $19.99, which is less than the $59.99 price of City of the Wolves.

Now is a great time to be a fan of fighting games. Street Fighter 6 is well into its third year and really finding its momentum. And Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is coming soon, looking to be the next major hit from Arc System Works. To celebrate the launch of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, Sony announced the FlexStrike Wireless Fight Stick, signaling their renewed focus on the fighting game community. Things are looking bright for the genre as a whole, and it’s exciting to see classic titles getting attention again.
