It’s a common tactic: developers hint that if their new game doesn’t sell well, they might not make another one. Essentially, they’re saying buy this game or don’t expect a sequel.
It seems Koei Tecmo is taking this approach with Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered. Apparently, that’s how they’re handling it.
The updated version – which is essentially a completely new game – was revealed at the latest State of Play, and is scheduled to launch in March 2026.
The announcement of this revival surprised many, as a lot of fans had predicted the developer would choose to remake either the highly-regarded Dynasty Warriors 4 or Dynasty Warriors 5.
However, beginning with the 3rd installment, which has a somewhat less complex design, seems logical when you consider the perspective of series producer Tomohiko Sho.
I was reading an interview with Sho over at Denfaminicogamer (and Automaton translated it for us), and it’s really interesting! He was explaining that remaking a PlayStation 2 game isn’t as simple as it sounds – it actually costs a lot of money. Especially when they want to build the whole thing in a new engine and add a bunch of improvements to how it plays. It’s more involved than you might think!
It’s “really difficult to achieve”, he says.
However, creating games takes a lot of work, so Sho acknowledges that the Dynasty Warriors 3 remake must be commercially successful if they want to consider making more remakes in the future. Essentially, its sales will determine whether or not future remake projects happen. It’s a crucial factor for the series’ future.
He states quite directly that if this game doesn’t do well, there won’t be a sequel, and he hopes players will support it.
Sho also stated during the interview that there are currently no further plans for remakes or remasters. So, that seems to be the end of the story, as far as those projects are concerned.
I’m really excited about Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered coming out next year – I definitely plan on checking it out! Honestly though, I was kind of hoping they’d remake a different Dynasty Warriors game. Still, I’m hyped! Just a warning to everyone reading – watch out for Lu Bu in the comments, he’s always lurking!
