By July 2025, according to Stat Counter, Windows 11 has become the leading version of Windows, overtaking Windows 10 after four years since its release. With Windows 10’s support ending soon, Windows 11 has seen significant growth in popularity over the past few months.
Presently, according to Stat Counter, Windows 11 holds approximately 50.88% of the Windows market share, while Windows 10 has slipped to 46.2%. This means Windows 11 now enjoys a substantial advantage over its earlier version, which was only able to capture under 10% of the market in 2022, having been introduced in 2021.
Since that point, there has been a gradual yet consistent increase, going from 18% to 28% in 2023 and further rising to 36% in 2024. It was this year, however, that Windows 11 truly began gaining traction, possibly due to Microsoft intensifying the promotion of Windows 10’s end-of-support deadline.
With more than half of Windows users now running Windows 11, we can estimate that approximately 700 million devices using the platform are active each month. While Stat Counter isn’t a perfectly reliable source, it does provide us with a broad understanding of the direction in which the market is heading.
Starting from October 14, Windows 10 will no longer be eligible for standard support from Microsoft. However, they have recently announced an offer for Windows 10 users: by linking your device to a Microsoft Account and saving your PC’s settings data in the cloud, you can continue to receive additional security updates for free during the following year.
In essence, Microsoft aims to get a large number of users to transition to Windows 11. It remains intriguing if the extra year of complimentary security updates for Windows 10 will slow down the current growth spree that Windows 11 is experiencing. Notably, among gamers, Windows 11 has emerged as the most popular Windows operating system via Steam.
Previously this year, Microsoft expressed their intention for the year 2025 to mark a major overhaul of PC systems, indicating that they would not make substantial changes to Windows 11 from a system standpoint. The company has verified that the upcoming version 25H2, slated for release this autumn, will share the same base as version 24H2 in order to avoid any compatibility problems.
The launch of Windows 11 has sparked much debate due to several factors. Notably, it marks the first significant increase in system requirements for Windows in many years, making it incompatible with a substantial portion of users who currently use Windows 10.
It seems that most existing Windows 10 computers available for purchase today do not fulfill the necessary requirements for an upgrade to Windows 11. Consequently, users who wish to transition to Windows 11 will be compelled to acquire a brand new Windows 11 PC. Given that this year marks a decade since many of these Windows 10 devices were first introduced, it’s understandable that they may now appear outdated.
For the first time, Windows 11 demands a Microsoft account and internet connectivity during the initial setup process, which includes downloading and installing the most recent updates before you can utilize your computer. This has left some users displeased with the abundance of advertisements and unnecessary software (often referred to as bloat) that comes pre-installed on Windows 11.
Many of the ads and unnecessary features (bloat) were already found in Windows 10, and thus, when upgrading to Windows 11, users may not see significant changes. Remember this when considering your transition from Windows 10, as it’s one factor to bear in mind if you’ve been hesitant due to these elements. This isn’t meant as an excuse, but simply a point to take into account.
Windows 11 can be obtained for free if your Windows 10 computer satisfies the necessary system specifications. If not, Microsoft advises consumers to consider purchasing a new Copilot+ PC with built-in AI capabilities. These unique features are accessible only on devices equipped with a Neural Processing Unit (NPU), capable of delivering at least 40 TeraOps (TOPS) of processing power.
