Resident Evil Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi has explained that the game feels “almost like an improvement” over Resident Evil 2, focusing more on the scary, survival-horror aspects than Village or Resident Evil 4. This same idea extends to the boss fights, which are designed to make players “solve problems and be clever” – much like in the original two Resident Evil games.
“Yes, there will be boss battles,” he said to Automaton-Media. “But instead of winning by shooting enemies in a spectacular way, like in many action games, it’s more similar to Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2. Players will gradually unlock new areas within confined spaces and have to solve puzzles and use strategy to progress.”
The story follows the development of the main character, Grace Ashcroft, as she changes from being frightened by her circumstances to actively defending herself. “A key element that makes the Resident Evil series so engaging is how characters start out terrified but become more resilient as they face challenging situations. Initially, Grace is scared, but the events ultimately push her to overcome her fear and learn to fight back against her enemies.”
“Sharing in the main character’s journey of development is a real standout part of the game,” explained Nakanishi. He also noted that knives will introduce “new ways” to defeat enemies.
Naturally, there’s talk about Leon S. Kennedy being a playable character, and it seems he’ll have access to larger gameplay areas than Grace. However, reports suggest his experiences will be more realistic and frightening than in past games. Considering how outlandish the bosses have been in previous installments, it will be interesting to see what they come up with in the sequel.
Resident Evil Requiem will be released on February 27th, 2026, for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game is launching as part of the celebration of the Resident Evil series’ 40th anniversary, and will be joined by releases of Resident Evil 7: biohazard and Resident Evil Village on the same day for Nintendo Switch 2 owners.
