Spaceballs 2’s Avengers Actor Casting Sets Up Its Most Exciting Star Wars Parody

Last week, comedy lovers and fans of the Spaceballs universe were thrilled when Amazon MGM revealed the cast for Spaceballs 2. The announcement came with a photo that strongly resembles the cast photo from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Filming has now begun on the sequel, which is scheduled for release in 2027. It was great to see so many original cast members returning, including Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman, and even Spaceballs director Mel Brooks. However, the new actors joining the film might be the biggest news, particularly the rumor that Bill Pullman’s son, Lewis Pullman, will be spoofing Kylo Ren in the Spaceballs sequel.

Pullman is Perfect as Kylo Ren-Type Character for Several Reasons

In the original Spaceballs, Bill Pullman portrayed Lone Star, the charming hero who was obviously inspired by both Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. And in the Star Wars sequels, Kylo Ren is the son of Han Solo and Princess Leia’s son, Ben. Casting Lewis Pullman as Bill Pullman’s son in the movie cleverly echoes the Star Wars sequel family dynamic that Spaceballs 2is aiming to parody. Additionally, Bill and Lewis have a real-life father-son relationship they can draw on for their performances. What’s more, Lewis Pullman recently impressed audiences in Thunderbolts* earlier this year as Robert Reynolds, demonstrating both his comedic timing and ability to play a darker role. His character had to carefully balance being a lighthearted source of humor with being the biggest threat to the Thunderbolts as both the hero Sentry and the powerful entity The Void. Pullman successfully handled this challenge, making Robert, or “Bob”, one of the most intriguing characters in the Marvel film and quickly winning over fans.

Additionally, Kylo Ren’s intense and overly serious personality is perfect for comedic imitation, no matter who does it. Adam Driver, who played Kylo Ren in Episodes VII through IX even joked about the character himself in a couple of popular Saturday Night Live sketches, where the Sith lord appeared on the reality show Undercover Boss. With funny filmmakers Mel Brooks and Josh Gad both working on the sequel as actors and writers (Brooks is producing, Gad co-wrote the script), we expect their take on Kylo Ren to be hilarious. This is especially true because Keke Palmer is playing a character named Destiny, who sounds like a parody of Jedi Rey. Palmer and Pullman could become a very funny comedic pair, particularly if Gad and the other writers plan to poke fun at the strange connection Rey and Kylo Ren had throughout the sequel trilogy. No matter what they have planned, it looks like the future of Spaceballs 2 is in good hands.
