Ghost of Yotei is now available, and many players have already experienced its intense, but satisfying, story of revenge. Ghost of Yotei marks PlayStation’s final major exclusive title of the year, and it’s been highly anticipated by fans. Ghost of Tsushima, released in 2020 during the pandemic, was a massive hit for PlayStation. The game received widespread acclaim for its easy-to-learn combat, compelling narrative, and stunning visuals. It offered a welcome alternative within the open-world genre, and it even led Sony to begin work on a movie adaptation.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting a continuation of the story. Fortunately, Ghost of Yotei is here, though it isn’t a direct sequel. Instead, it’s a spiritual successor, introducing a new character and setting. While it retains the gameplay and art style of the previous game, it focuses on the journey and impact of a completely new protagonist within the same universe. Now, let’s delve into the story of Atsu in Ghost of Yotei.
Major spoilers for Ghost of Yotei follow below.
Ghost of Yotei Story Explained

Ghost of Yotei features many interesting side quests that develop Atsu’s personality, but this explanation will only cover the main storyline, mostly following the order of events. When Atsu was young, she enjoyed a calm life with her family in a house on a scenic hill. One day, she and her brother, Jubei, went into the woods nearby to gather mushrooms. During their exploration, they met a friendly man called Lord Saito. The children invited him back to their home, and it was discovered he knew their father very well. However, the children were misled, as the two men clearly shared a complicated past.
Atsu’s father, Kengo, used to fight for Clan Saito, but he left after they started attacking villages. Saito justifies his actions by explaining his people were hungry and had no other choice. Saito then points out a small, masked group of swordsmen and declares he will punish them severely. This group, called the Yotei Six, brutally killed her mother, father, and brother right before her eyes. They then impaled her onto a burning gingko tree with a sword, and left her to die.
Atsu broke free from the tree and managed to escape, ultimately leaving her home in Ezo to become a skilled and ruthless mercenary. After 16 years, she returned to seek revenge on the Yotei Six. She immediately went after a man called The Snake, burning down the building he was in and fighting him to the death. Though she defeated this member of the Yotei Six, she was also mortally wounded. However, a mysterious spiritual power seemed to revive her or keep her spirit tethered to the world, causing onlookers to call her the “Onryo”-a vengeful spirit capable of causing destruction among the living.

Atsu goes back to what’s left of her home, deeply troubled by memories of her family and feeling responsible for bringing the group there in the first place. When she discovers that Saito is gathering an army to seize Ezo, Atsu embarks on a mission to eliminate the remaining members of the Yotei Six – including Saito’s sons, known as The Dragon and The Spider, as well as the Kitsune, the Oni, and Saito himself.
During her quest, Atsu receives help from the Matsumae army to defeat the Oni. However, she discovers that a leading soldier is actually her brother, whom she believed had died. They are reunited, but Jubei warns Atsu against seeking revenge, fearing she’s on a destructive course with no turning back. Sadly, Atsu seems unwilling to listen and remains determined to have her way.
Having defeated the Oni, Atsu travels north to the snowy region of Ezo to confront the Kitsune. She discovers the Kitsune leads the Nine Tails, a hidden and formidable group that uses tactics like poison to win battles. Atsu teams up with a woman named Oyuki to defeat the Kitsune, and learns the group took inspiration from Ghost of Tsushima’s Jin Sakai, even creating a poison called Wolfsbane. During a direct confrontation, Atsu is poisoned, but Oyuki manages to save her.

Surprisingly, we learn that Oyuki was the very first Kitsune, and she left the Yotei Six because she felt guilty about what happened to Atsu’s family. She intended to double-cross Saito, but he anticipated her move and replaced her with a new, younger warrior who became the Kitsune. In the end, Atsu is able to gain Oyuki’s trust and they form a powerful bond, ultimately defeating the Kitsune for good.
Following an unsuccessful attack on Lord Saito at one of his bases, the powerful warlord travels south with his two sons. Their actions have been causing fear in the southern region of Ezo, leading Atsu to intervene. She teams up with Oyuki and Jubei to oppose Saito’s forces and locate his sons. During this, Jubei shares that he has a playful daughter named Kiku, who becomes fascinated with her aunt, Atsu. Although hesitant, Atsu agrees to let Kitsu assist with covert operations, but it requires some compromises.
Oyuki, Kiku, and Atsu find the Spider and discover he plans to watch a play that recreates the day Atsu’s family died. Atsu intervenes, altering the past by killing everyone while the image of the burning tree is displayed. Kiku witnesses Atsu giving in to the Onryo’s fury, brutally defeating dozens of soldiers. This is one of Atsu’s most intense and violent acts, deeply affecting her niece. Eventually, Atsu understands that her actions aren’t entirely beneficial, and continuing on this course could lead Kiku to become consumed by a spirit of vengeance as well.
Atsu manages to capture the Spider, intending to use it as bait to lure out the Dragon. However, Saito’s army proves to be more cunning. While they do fall for the trap, they cleverly use the Dragon as a diversion, allowing Saito and his soldiers to launch an attack and demolish Matsumae Castle. Jubei asks his sister for assistance in defending against the assault, but her desire for revenge overwhelms her, and she chooses to eliminate the Dragon before it can escape her grasp.
Ghost of Yotei Ending Explained

In the end, Matsumae Castle is defeated and Jubei and Oyuki are captured by Saito. Worried about Kiku, Atsu takes her to a safe place – her childhood home – and then goes after the Spider, who Saito has banished for not being able to protect his brother. Surprisingly, the Spider isn’t harmed and reveals to Atsu the location of both her brother and Oyuki. After a bold rescue attempt, the three of them discover that Saito is missing, but they figure out he’s gone back to Atsu’s family home, where Kiku is currently staying.
He’s kidnapped Kiku and challenges Atsu to a fight, saying they both share the same desire for revenge. But Atsu disagrees, explaining she’s discovered a new reason to live thanks to the family she’s found. She fights Saito, but he quickly overpowers her. Jubei intervenes to help, and they fight Saito together, however, Saito manages to gain the advantage and mortally wounds Jubei.
So, it all comes down to Atsu defeating Saito – he actually pins him to that gingko tree using Saito’s own sword! Then, things get really intense as Kiku and Oyuki race over to help Jubei, who’s seriously wounded. He gives Kiku this really sad look, and Atsu makes a promise to her. He tells her she’ll never be alone again, not like she’s been. It’s like she’s finally breaking this awful cycle. By accepting Kiku, she’s not just healing her own past, but also stopping Kiku from ending up like she did. It’s a powerful moment, honestly. Definitely hit me hard.

Half a year has passed, and Atsu has chosen to retire from fighting, wanting to enjoy a calmer life with Kiku and Oyuki. She goes to Jubei’s grave to tell him that his daughter is growing up well and is showing promise as a musician. Finally, the wolf that appeared at various points in the game arrives at their home and gives Atsu a friendly greeting.
She informs the creature that her pursuit is finished, and it simply walks away, disappearing from view. This animal appears to be a symbol of her anger and desire for revenge, becoming calmer and less aggressive as the narrative progresses. Eventually, when she finally releases these feelings, she’s able to say goodbye to the wolf as well. Ghost of Yotei remains playable even after the main story concludes, but it’s presented as Atsu recounting stories to Kiku before Saito’s passing. There isn’t a traditional “endgame,” because Atsu officially abandons her violent past following her final battle.
