Anime remakes don’t happen very often, but they always get existing fans talking. Releasing a new anime based on a popular manga also draws in new viewers, especially those who weren’t fans of the older animation. A good example is *One Piece*. Though incredibly famous, not everyone loves the anime version. While the manga is the best-selling of all time, the anime has faced criticism for its pacing and animation quality. This is understandable, though, considering the anime started in 1999 and has been produced weekly ever since.
A remake of the anime was officially announced by WIT Studio in December 2023 at Jump Festa 2024. While it’s been nearly two years since the announcement and we’ve seen some early concept art, the release date is still unknown. The studio has promised to improve the pacing, which has been a major issue with the current anime. Although the remake is taking time, fans can expect high quality, given WIT Studio’s track record. Similar to the ongoing *One Piece* reboot, other classic Shonen anime could also benefit from a modern update. These series all struggle with filler content and slow pacing, and might be better enjoyed with a seasonal release and updated animation.
3) Naruto
Originally released in the 2000s, the *Naruto* anime, like many shows of that era, suffered from slow pacing and unnecessary filler episodes. Despite this, *Naruto* remains incredibly popular and is considered one of the “Big Three” anime alongside *One Piece* and *Bleach*, with many fans hoping for a remake. While the action sequences are exciting, they don’t quite measure up to the standards of newer action anime like *Jujutsu Kaisen* and *Demon Slayer*. Plus, the anime sometimes differs from the original manga, which alters how some characters, including Sakura Haruno, are portrayed.
2) Bleach
Both *Bleach* and *Naruto* were made by the same animation studio, so it’s not surprising they faced similar challenges when adapting the manga. *Naruto* altered some scenes involving Sakura, and *Bleach* did the same with its main female character, Orihime Inoue. The recent *Thousand-Year Blood War* arc of *Bleach* clearly demonstrates how much stronger the series can be with a seasonal release schedule, improved animation, and a good pace. The difference in quality between the original anime and this final arc, which came out over ten years later, is significant.
1) Dragon Ball
Originally debuting in 1986, *Dragon Ball* is a natural fit for a modern update. The series remains incredibly popular and fundamentally changed the action-adventure genre, making its core themes and elements still relevant today. While recent installments like *Dragon Ball Super* and *Daima* boast impressive animation, reimagining the original manga with current anime styles could reintroduce this fantastic story to a new generation. Fans are always excited for new *Dragon Ball* content, and a reboot would likely maintain their engagement for years to come, especially considering the passing of Akira Toriyama and how it will shape future projects.
