Despite the rise of digital games, people are still buying physical copies for the PS5, and Ghost of Yotei has been a standout success.
According to Chris Dring of GamesIndustry.biz, the sequel to the samurai game is off to a strong start, achieving the number one spot in UK physical sales for the week.
It sold better than EA Sports FC 26 and tripled the sales of Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 on the Switch.
However, it did tally a 40% decline in retail sales compared to Ghost of Tsushima.
Just to emphasize, the digital market has exploded in recent years, and now makes up the vast majority of game sales. Sucker Punch’s last game also launched right when the pandemic was at its height.
While initial signs suggest Ghost of Yotei is performing well against its rivals, these early results don’t give us the complete picture.
Sony might share how well the game is doing worldwide eventually, but they usually only announce sales numbers if a game is performing exceptionally well, similar to what they did with titles like God of War Ragnarok and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
Early indications for Ghost of Yotei, at least in the UK, seem positive though.
