Netflix initially launched “Mindhunter” on their streaming service back in 2017, followed by a second season that debuted two years later, in 2019. Regrettably, production for a third season of “Mindhunter” has been postponed indefinitely and the show’s continuation has since been officially called off.
Despite passing eight years since its initial airing, the program’s fan base remains strong, and they have been eagerly requesting a follow-up for quite some time. In a fresh interview, actor Holt McCallany shared intriguing news about potential plans for a three-movie revival of the show. More recently, Charlize Theron, who served as an executive producer on the series, offered a candid update on the likelihood of this continuation in another interview.
As a cinephile, I’d venture to say that if we’re discussing three new feature films, they’d likely find themselves in the realm of cinematic mastery that is David Fincher.
The actress went on to say, “The decision lies with him, and if he can grasp the concept, then it will come to fruition. I’m confident that he shares my passion for this realm as deeply as I do, but he only engages when he genuinely perceives a promising opportunity. He’s a practical individual, and if he chooses to act on it, he will.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but emphasize a crucial point during an exclusive interview: McCallany underscored the same thought – it’s essential that David Fincher is satisfied with the scripts.
For two seasons, the series “Mindhunter” was highly acclaimed by critics and even earned two Primetime Emmy nominations. On Rotten Tomatoes, this gripping psychological thriller has almost perfect ratings, with a remarkable 97% approval rating among critics and an equally impressive 95% approval rating from viewers.
Initially, the show boasted a wealth of potential, featuring compelling acting, an engaging concept, and bearing the prestigious director, David Fincher. Yet, prior to its ascension as a marquee Netflix production, it faced a hiatus. In February 2023, however, Fincher confirmed that the series had come to an end.
Nonetheless, the team continued to keep Netflix in close proximity. Following a four-year contract, Fincher helmed two original productions on the streaming service, resulting in “Mank” and “The Killer.” Additionally, he directed an episode and served as producer for another series.
Theron is additionally associated with Netflix, featuring in “The Old Guard” and its sequel, as well as executive producing shows like “Murder Mystery”, “Hyperdrive”, and “Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter”. Recently, Holt McCallany has seen success with his latest television series.
David Fincher Has Another Netflix Series in the Works
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Fincher’s return to the Mindhunter universe, he is currently engaged in another highly-anticipated project: an as-yet unconfirmed collaboration with Netflix. While specific details about the supposed project remain cloaked in secrecy, the latest rumors suggest that filming will commence in December of this year. At present, neither Fincher nor Netflix have officially confirmed the upcoming production.
In addition to the popular series “Squid Game,” director David Fincher is also set to work on another project titled “The Adventures of Cliff Booth“. This movie will feature a script written by none other than Quentin Tarantino.
