This week marked the end of Season 2 of “The Apothecary Diaries,” following up on events from Volume 4 of the light novel. Simultaneously, official announcements have unveiled plans for a sequel and revealed that the Season 2 original soundtrack CD, featuring Jinshi on its cover, will be released on September 17th, 2025, exclusively in Japan. The album contains 62 tracks from the anime and retails at 4180 yen (3800 yen without taxes). Additionally, it comes with a special booklet and jacket illustration sticker. Unlike the previous cover featuring Maomao, Jinshi will be showcased in a similar setting surrounded by plants and flowers.
The second installment of the anime series aired from Winter 2025 to Spring 2025, encompassing Volumes 3 and 4 of the source light novel. This season maintained the same structure as its predecessor, but no details have been confirmed regarding a third season yet. Although the official website hints at a sequel with a fresh teaser trailer, the specific format for the upcoming episodes remains undisclosed. The sequel will continue to delve into the enigmatic events happening in the kingdom, as Maomao and Jinshi unite once more to uncover the truth behind the unusual occurrences.
What Happened in The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 Finale?
In the climactic ending, the narrative undergoes a significant shift, notably when Jinshi discards his deception and embraces his destiny as the Lunar Prince. He’s been engrossed in managing the repercussions of the Shi Clan’s uprising ever since. Meanwhile, Maomao is barred from the Rear Palace now that her position as the poison taster has ended. Primarily an apothecary, she resumes her residence at the Verdigris House following Luomen’s reassignment to the Rear Palace.
It came as a surprise to everyone, not just Maomao, that Loulan gave the children a resurrection drug to shield them from the Imperial family’s execution plans. Due to the heavy snowfall, her whereabouts are unknown, so the search will be resumed in the spring. Maomao feels remorse over Loulan’s fate and their unfulfilled friendship understanding. However, she scarcely finds a moment for reflection due to being swamped with work at the Verdigris House more than she was in the Rear Palace.
Conversely, despite the distance and his hectic timetable, Jinshi always strives to see her whenever possible. He enquires about the hairpin he presented to her, to which Maomao admits that she loaned it to Shisui in anticipation of returning it one day. As the story draws to a close, we observe Loulan bartering the hairpin for a jade cicada. Now known as Tamamo, she intends to traverse the other side, aspiring to live life to its fullest. Unbeknownst to Maomao and the others, she has survived, and they may never discover this truth.
