Disney is revisiting its animated movies and restarting a live-action remake that was previously put on hold. This project could bring Scarlett Johansson back as a villain. While Disney’s live-action remakes have faced challenges – particularly with the poor performance of the live-action *Snow White* – the recent success of *Lilo & Stitch* has given at least one stalled project a new lease on life.
With the highly anticipated live-action *Moana* set to release in summer 2026, Disney is also bringing back plans for a live-action *Tangled*. According to *Deadline*, the remake of the 2010 animated film – which starred Mandy Moore as Rapunzel and Zachary Levi as Flynn Rider – is moving forward after being put on hold earlier this year. While details are still limited, Scarlett Johansson is reportedly being considered to play Mother Gothel, the villain who kidnapped Rapunzel as a baby. Donna Murphy originally voiced the character in the animated version.
Scarlett Johansson Is a Surprising Choice for Mother Grothel
Scarlett Johansson is a major Hollywood star, so casting her as Mother Gothel is a surprising move. She hasn’t played a villainous role in over 15 years – her last was in the 2012 film *Under the Skin*. By the time the live-action *Tangled* comes out, it will have been a long time since audiences have seen her play a bad guy.
This isn’t to say Johansson can’t play darker roles. Her performance as the alien disguised as a human in *Under the Skin* is still considered one of her best. She’s also well-known for playing characters with shades of gray, like Black Widow in the Marvel movies.
Tangled Being Revived Is Good News for the State of Disney’s Live-Action Remakes
Disney has been making live-action versions of its classic animated films for several years, and many have done well. However, the recent live-action *Snow White* film didn’t succeed. Even before its release, the movie faced criticism, and it ultimately earned only $145 million worldwide, despite costing $270 million to make.
Because the movie *Snow White* didn’t do as well as expected, Disney started rethinking its strategy for live-action remakes, and some projects were put on hold. *Tangled* was one of the first, pausing development in April. Then, a few months later, the live-action remake of *The Aristocats* was canceled, which led to worries about the future of Disney’s live-action films.
The decision to remake *Tangled* shows the studio is still dedicated to turning its animated films into live-action movies. With the original *Tangled* earning nearly $600 million globally and staying popular with audiences, the new version is expected to be a major attraction for fans.
