Though it originally appeared in the 1970s, the *Mobile Suit Gundam* anime series remains incredibly popular. The franchise consistently finds success by trying new ideas, and while some series, like *Gundam Wing* and *Gundam GQuuuuuuX*, explore different universes, it often revisits the original story of Amuro and Char. The next *Gundam* movie will continue the recent film trilogy, and fans in the US will be happy to know it’s coming to theaters here.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting *Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circle*, the second film in the Hathaway’s Flash trilogy, which returns to the world of the original *Gundam* anime. While the first movie was released in Japanese theaters in 2021, it came to Netflix for Western audiences. Good news for US fans: Bandai Namco Filmworks has confirmed the second film will be shown in American theaters next year, although a specific date hasn’t been announced yet. With *The Sorcery of Nymph Circle* premiering in Japan on January 30th, a release in Western countries is likely to follow soon after.
The Gundam Team Speaks
I’m so hyped for this movie! I just read what Kensho Ono, the Japanese voice of Hathaway Noa, had to say, and it’s getting me even more excited. He described Hathaway as someone who really wrestles with big questions about justice and what he’s even fighting for, and it sounds incredibly emotional. He’s really struggling with these doubts, and with Gigi’s influence becoming more and more intense. Ono even asked if it’s the world that’s messed up, or something else entirely! He wants us to see how it all unfolds, and honestly, I can’t wait to find out!
It was so exciting to hear from Gigi Andalucia, the voice of Reina Ueda! She added a really interesting layer to the news, making me wonder if she fully understands the impact she has on this story. She described moments where it almost *sounds* like she’s playfully experimenting with the name “Hathaway Noa,” but she also hinted at a lot of depth and struggle underneath that playful delivery. She’s really hoping the audience can connect with that honesty and complexity in her performance, and honestly, I think we will!
The newest *Gundam* movie continues the story of Hathaway, torn between his feelings for Gigi and his duties with MAFTY. Kenneth is preparing to stop MAFTY, and Gigi’s actions will dramatically impact both men. Bandai Namco Filmworks describes the film as an intense space opera filled with drama, action, and complex emotions. It will be released in Japan this winter and in the United States at a later date.
