Season 2 of *Peacemaker* expanded the DC Universe with several new elements. We met characters from an alternate, villainous Earth, saw more of Peacemaker’s adult brother, and learned more about the Quantum Unfolding Chamber – including its history and the many different worlds contained within it. The Chamber is also home to a mysterious creature known as the Kyphotic Alien.
The Kyphotic Alien has been a consistently funny, and sometimes strange, presence throughout the series. He always enters through a mysterious door in the QUC and unceremoniously dumps the bodies of small, unpleasant creatures into an incinerator. Peacemaker constantly attempts to greet him, but the alien never responds. Adding to the humor, he even makes a cameo dancing in the opening credits of *Peacemaker* Season 2. Now, after a few appearances, we’re finally learning more about who – or what – he is.
One of Peacemaker Season 2’s Weirdest Stories Does Have an Explanation
James Gunn, the creator of *Peacemaker* and co-head of DC Studios, recently discussed the show’s season finale with ComicBook. He talked in detail about the various alien worlds glimpsed through the doors at the QUC, including some ideas he ultimately decided against. The conversation eventually led to the Kyphotic Alien and whether Gunn had considered showing us its home world. When asked if he’d ever thought about going *through* the door the alien emerged from, Gunn shared a surprising answer.
Okay, so the character is deliberately…ordinary. He’s not a hero, not a wizard, just a guy who cleans up messes. Think Tim Taylor’s neighbor from *Home Improvement* – completely relatable. The interesting twist? He deals with otherworldly, toxic…stuff. Basically, he’s like an exterminator, but for interdimensional pests. He doesn’t *want* him to be special; the story thrives on the contrast between this incredibly normal guy and the bizarre things he’s tasked with handling. It’s a really cool concept, keeping the focus on his everyday life while hinting at this hidden, extraordinary job.
This example shows what many James Gunn fans already understand: he carefully considers every choice he makes, always with a specific purpose or story in mind. Even when aiming for humor, he’s constantly thinking ahead and crafting a narrative. This should give DC fans a lot of optimism for what’s to come.
James Gunn has successfully used this approach before, subtly planting clues about major plot points throughout the *Guardians of the Galaxy* trilogy. Now, overseeing the entire DC Universe with its vast cast and many upcoming films, this skill could be a significant advantage for him and DCU.
