Sony has added a new feature to the PlayStation Store inspired by popular tools on Steam. Over time, Sony has been steadily improving the PS Store to help PS5 and PS4 players choose games. Recently, they introduced a 5-star review system, letting players rate games based on their personal experiences. Now, Sony is taking this a step further, giving users more detailed ways to share their opinions.
This week, PlayStation added a new feature to its store: users can now write detailed reviews of games, not just give them a 5-star rating. These reviews can be up to 4,000 characters long, and you can even specify which version of the game you’re reviewing – for example, if you want to share your thoughts specifically on the Digital Deluxe Edition of *MLB The Show 25*.
Steam has had a highly-regarded review system for years, and it’s a key part of what makes its platform successful. It’s a smart move for PlayStation to adopt a similar system for the PS Store, and it significantly improves the experience for users.
This PS Store Addition Could Come With Some Drawbacks
It’s good that the PlayStation Store is continuing to improve, but these updates could have some downsides. One issue is that game reviews might contain spoilers, which could ruin the experience for players who want to discover the story on their own. Sony has included a spoiler tag option, but it relies on users actually marking their reviews correctly, and there’s no way to ensure everyone will do so.
A common problem with online reviews – “review bombing” – still exists, but PlayStation is taking steps to minimize it. Now, you can only leave a review for a game if you’ve actually bought it, or accessed it through a service like PlayStation Plus. This doesn’t guarantee review bombing will stop completely, but Sony is proactively trying to prevent unfair, baseless negative reviews.
Currently, you won’t find written reviews directly on the PlayStation Store on your PS5 or PS4. Sony might add this feature in a future update, but for now, the only place to read reviews is on the game’s page on the PlayStation website.
