Bethesda Teases New Game (And It May Be Bringing Back Series We Haven’t Seen Since the 2010s)

Bethesda, now part of Xbox, is hinting at a new game that will likely be announced shortly. It seems this game could revive a beloved series that hasn’t been seen in over a decade, and finally give fans the third installment they’ve been anticipating for eight years.

MachineGames, the studio behind the *Wolfenstein* series and the recent *Indiana Jones and the Great Circle*, recently celebrated its 15th anniversary with a thank you message to fans on X (formerly Twitter). Along with the message, they shared a graphic showing all the games they’ve made. The lineup is mostly *Wolfenstein* titles, with *Indiana Jones* being the most recent release. Notably, there’s an empty box with a question mark after *Indiana Jones*, strongly suggesting a new game is in development.

Mystery Game

It’s probably not a new game franchise, as that’s unlikely given the circumstances. The most likely possibilities are a sequel to *Indiana Jones and the Great Circle* or a new *Wolfenstein* game. While a continuation of *Indiana Jones* is possible, the licensing costs and the fact that the first game didn’t perform exceptionally well make it seem improbable, especially considering Xbox acquired Bethesda after the initial game was approved. Therefore, it’s more probable that MachineGames will return to developing games in the *Wolfenstein* series, which they are well-known for.

Dormant

It’s been six years since the last *Wolfenstein* game, and the previous entries weren’t well-received. In 2019, two games were released: *Wolfenstein: Youngblood* and *Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot*. *Cyberpilot* was a minor VR title, while *Youngblood*, a spin-off, was considered one of the worst games of that year, leading to worries the series might be over. It’s possible the series stalled for a couple of reasons: the sensitive political landscape of recent years and the fact that *Wolfenstein* games don’t achieve massive sales numbers. The development studio was also focused on creating the new *Indiana Jones* game.

The story begun in *Wolfenstein: The New Order* (2014) and *Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus* (2017) feels unfinished, so fans would be upset if a third game doesn’t come out relatively soon. Both MachineGames and Bethesda have repeatedly stated that *Wolfenstein III* is planned, they just need to make it a priority and follow through.
