Channing Tatum Reveals Marvel’s Canceled Gambit Movie Was Too Extreme For The MCU

Channing Tatum has long hoped to play Gambit in a Marvel movie, and he finally got his chance in *Deadpool & Wolverine*. Fans were excited to see him debut as Remy LeBeau alongside other characters from the old Fox Marvel films, like Elektra and Blade. He’s now set to return as Gambit in the upcoming *Avengers: Doomsday* movie. There was once a plan for a solo *Gambit* film, and Tatum recently shared what that movie would have been about. He also explained why it wouldn’t work now, saying it was too intense for the current Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Channing Tatum recently told Variety that the planned Gambit movie was incredibly edgy. He explained that their version, developed at Fox, was an R-rated romantic comedy with very explicit content. Tatum said it was so over-the-top—including scenes of mutants having sex—that it would never be approved by Marvel or Disney. He likened the character to one that could only fit within a Deadpool movie.

Look, when it comes to Disney, you pretty much know what you’re getting – family-friendly stuff. They steer clear of anything truly scary or, well, adult. But I think Marvel could really benefit from shaking things up a bit. They need some tonal variety, something with a bit more edge to balance out all the superheroics. That’s why I’m so intrigued by the idea of a Gambit movie. There’s just so much potential there, and they’ve been subtly building him up as a character for a while now. It’s really interesting to watch, and I have a feeling Marvel will eventually realize what they’ve got with him.

Channing Tatum’s Fox Gambit is Too Extreme for the MCU

Because Tatum’s Gambit was created for the gritty world of *Deadpool*, fitting him into the more mainstream Marvel Cinematic Universe was bound to require some adjustments. While Gambit had some edgy moments in *Deadpool & Wolverine*, they felt similar in tone to Deadpool’s own antics.

It used to seem unlikely that Deadpool would appear alongside other Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes, but the huge success of *Deadpool & Wolverine* has changed that. However, Deadpool hasn’t really interacted with many characters outside of his own films yet, and if he does, it won’t be until a future film, *Doomsday*.

The upcoming film will serve as a first look at how a character known from the *Deadpool* universe interacts with the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gambit will be alongside other characters from the Fox X-Men films, and likely some established MCU heroes. While the original script contained suggestive scenes, Disney’s willingness to push boundaries with *Deadpool & Wolverine* suggests the movie will still have some playful and edgy humor.

Following the storylines of *Doomsday* and *Secret Wars*, Marvel is expected to select favorite characters and ideas to create a fresh universe. I wouldn’t be shocked if the version of the X-Man played by Tatum was included, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
