Hollywood is mourning a legend.
Diane Keaton, the celebrated actress known for her roles in classic films like *The Godfather*, *The First Wives Club*, and *Annie Hall*, has passed away at the age of 79, according to her representative who spoke with *People* magazine on October 11th. She had a remarkable nearly six-decade career in Hollywood.
After hearing about her death, former coworkers, including Bette Midler, who starred with her in *First Wives Club*, shared their sadness.
I was so incredibly saddened to hear about the passing of Diane Keaton. Bette Midler shared the news on Instagram, and it just broke my heart. Diane was truly one of a kind – hilarious, completely authentic, and refreshingly free of the usual competitive spirit you sometimes see in big stars. She was exactly as genuine and wonderful as she appeared – a truly special person, and I’ll miss her dearly. It’s just…oh, la, lala! A real loss.
Kimberly Williams-Paisley, who played the daughter in *Father of the Bride*, shared a heartfelt tribute, saying, “Diane, working with you was a true joy and one of the best experiences of my life. You were incredibly special, and I loved being around you. Thank you for your kindness, generosity, talent, and especially your wonderful laugh.”
Viola Davis expressed disbelief at the news, before sharing a heartfelt message to her late friend.
“Absolutely not! Please, not yet!” Viola Davis exclaimed. She continued, “You perfectly captured what it means to be a woman—the sadness, the humor, the lightness, and that youthful, vulnerable quality. You put your entire self into every character, making them completely unforgettable.”
Viola continued, “You were completely and wonderfully yourself, and I loved that. Rest peacefully. My thoughts and prayers are with your family, and I believe you’re being welcomed home by angels.”
Josh Gad shared memories of being deeply inspired by her films, and how special it was to eventually work alongside her.
“This is a huge loss,” the *Frozen* star shared. “Diane Keaton really shaped my love for film. Her work, from *Annie Hall* and *The Godfather* movies to *First Wives Club*, *Baby Boom*, *Father of the Bride*, and *Something’s Gotta Give*, was truly iconic and deserving of a place in the hall of fame.”
I had the good fortune to work with her on an HBO pilot that never aired, and I was immediately struck by how down-to-earth, hilariously witty, and incredibly gifted she was – truly one of the most talented people I’ve ever met.
Luke Evans, meanwhile, shared a memory from their day together at Wimbledon.
Evans shared a photo of himself with Diane Keaton from a 2016 tennis match, writing, “What a sad day. Rest in peace, Diane Keaton.” He described her as a talented and kind actor with a warm and independent personality.
As Nia Vardalos beautifully stated, Diane Keaton possessed grace, style, and incredible talent. She was a comedic force who raised the standard for future performers. Rest peacefully, sweet and funny Diane.
