Superhero movies consistently perform incredibly well at the box office these days, often breaking records. What used to be rare and sometimes disappointing attempts to bring comics to life has evolved into a thriving genre known for its thoughtful storytelling and epic battles between good and evil. Many recent superhero films have been huge successes, drawing even more attention to the genre. Now, with actors receiving critical acclaim for their roles in these movies, the future looks bright, and even established stars are eager to join the world of comic book adaptations.
Actors striving for excellent performances can sometimes become overly dedicated to their roles. This intense preparation, often seen in ‘method acting’ where performers fully inhabit a character, can occasionally lead to awkward or confusing situations with their fellow actors and the film crew. While not typical in superhero movies, there have been a few surprising instances of actors taking this approach to extreme lengths.
7) Joaquin Phoenix in Joker (2019)

Joaquin Phoenix won an Oscar for his role in the 2019 film *Joker*. Many consider his portrayal one of the best live-action versions of the character, but he achieved this through intense method acting. He lost a significant amount of weight and reportedly practiced the Joker’s disturbing, involuntary laughter even when not filming, which often confused and bothered those around him.
6) Jared Leto in Morbius (2022)

Despite being widely considered a poor comic book movie, *Morbius* featured a remarkably dedicated performance from its star, Jared Leto. Known for his intense method acting, Leto reportedly stayed in character throughout the entire production. He went to extreme lengths to portray the character’s physical disability, initially refusing to stop limping even when going to the bathroom, which caused delays. Eventually, he agreed to use a wheelchair to move around more quickly, but his commitment to the role was still unusually intense.
5) Thomas Jane in The Punisher (2004)

The 2004 film *The Punisher* doesn’t often get much attention when people talk about Marvel movies. Although the film had its flaws, Thomas Jane’s portrayal of the Punisher himself was a standout. He fully committed to the role, spending six months training with a SWAT expert, consuming as many as eight meals daily to build physique, and even undergoing more extensive weapons training than the military. Thomas Jane truly *became* Frank Castle, delivering some of the most memorable Punisher scenes ever put on film.
4) Wesley Snipes in Blade: Trinity (2004)

The making of the 2004 film Blade: Trinity was notoriously difficult, largely due to issues with Wesley Snipes’ behavior towards the cast and crew. Part of the problem was his dedication to method acting. Reports say he’d only communicate with the director, David S. Goyer, through Post-it notes, always signed as his character, Blade. He also reportedly stayed in character constantly, even off-camera, which caused frequent clashes on set.
3) Christian Bale in Batman Begins (2005)

Christopher Nolan’s *The Dark Knight* trilogy is widely considered a high point for superhero movies, but the production wasn’t without its challenges. Star Christian Bale was incredibly dedicated to his role as Batman, sometimes to an extreme degree. Fresh off filming *The Machinist*, where he lost a significant amount of weight, Bale quickly gained 100 pounds to prepare for the part. He actually gained *too* much weight and had to lose some before filming the action sequences. Despite the difficulties, Bale’s commitment to the physical demands of the role was remarkable, though perhaps a bit risky.
2) Jared Leto in Suicide Squad (2016)

Jared Leto is famous for his intense method acting, and his unusual behavior on the set of the 2016 film *Suicide Squad* received a lot of attention. Before appearing as the Joker, reports surfaced that he sent disturbing “gifts” to his co-stars, including a dead pig to a table read and a live rat to Margot Robbie, as well as sexually suggestive items to other cast members. While Leto has questioned some of these stories, his co-stars have confirmed that his behavior was extreme. Despite all the buzz, his performance as the Joker didn’t ultimately resonate with fans.
1) Nicolas Cage in Ghost Rider (2007)

Nicolas Cage is famous for his roles in action films, but he’s also known for being a bit unusual. Before and during filming of *Ghost Rider* and its sequel, *Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance*, Cage reportedly spent time painting his face like the Haitian spirit Baron Samedi and carrying charms to connect with the supernatural. He believed these practices would help him truly *become* the Ghost Rider, adding to his already well-known reputation for taking a very unique and often strange approach to his craft.
