Comics have often sparked debate and disagreement. Since the first Superman comics appeared, many characters and storylines from various publishers have caused controversy, sometimes even leading to projects being canceled before they could be released. A particular Swamp Thing story from 1989 suffered this fate, but after decades of requests from fans, it’s finally about to be published.
DC Comics announced at New York Comic Con that a long-lost Swamp Thing story will be released in 2026. Originally cancelled in 1989, the four-issue arc by Rick Veitch – issues #88-91 – will now be published under the title Swamp Thing 1989. The publisher plans to release it in a way that allows fans to seamlessly integrate these issues into their existing collections as if they had been published at the original time.
Why Was Veitch’s Swamp Thing Cancelled?
Fans have waited nearly forty years for the story from *Swamp Thing 1989* to see the light of day. Originally titled “Morning of the Magician,” the story involved Swamp Thing traveling back in time and encountering Jesus Christ, with artwork depicting him as the cross on Calvary. Though written by Veitch and illustrated by Michael Zulli, DC Comics decided the story was too controversial and cancelled its publication. Veitch subsequently left the *Swamp Thing* title.
Last year, talk began about possibly reviving a lost story by Veitch featuring *Swamp Thing*. An email address was created to gather fan feedback on publishing the story, known as “Swamp Thing 88.” Veitch reports the response was overwhelming and DC Comics clearly took notice.
Veitch expressed gratitude on social media, particularly to those who participated in last year’s letter-writing campaign. When DC Comics was still considering a decision, they asked for public feedback on a specific issue, ST 88, providing an email address for submissions. Veitch shared this email address on Facebook, and the response was incredibly strong, with over 500 people sharing their thoughts – many with compelling arguments. Within three days, DC Comics understood the public’s position and decided to move forward with publication, asking Veitch to end the campaign, which he did. He believes the campaign played a key role in their final decision.
The four-part *Swamp Thing 1989* comic series, written by Veitch with art by Zulli, Vince Locke, and Tom Mandrake, and colors by Trish Mulvihill, will finally be released in 2026. This edition will present the story as originally planned, complete with the classic DC Comics look and feel of the era, effectively preserving a piece of comic book history.
