Diane Keaton’s Friend Details Final Weeks Before Her Death

Diane Keaton’s loved ones are still reeling after her death.

I’m still reeling from the news about Diane… it just doesn’t seem real. My heart breaks knowing she’s gone. Carole Bayer Sager, a friend of Diane’s and an incredible songwriter, shared something so touching – she said she visited Diane just two or three weeks before she passed. Can you imagine? It’s just… devastating to think about those final moments. Carole is such a treasure, and I’m so glad she shared that little piece of Diane with us.

Carole remembered being surprised by how thin Diane looked, telling *People* magazine, “She had lost a lot of weight.”

The 81-year-old, who helped write Diane Keaton’s song “First Christmas,” said she hadn’t seen Diane as often this year. Diane had been spending more time in Palm Springs after wildfires damaged her home in California.

Carole said that after being away for some time, she was surprised by how much weight her friend had lost when she returned.

Honestly, even though we don’t know exactly what Diane was going through, my mom, Carole, always talked about how much she touched everyone’s lives. It wasn’t about the struggles, it was about the incredible impact she had on people. She just made everyone feel something, you know?

She was a truly radiant person who brought joy to everyone around her,” she said with enthusiasm. “I adored her. She had a remarkable energy that instantly brightened any space. She was always cheerful, positive, and loved capturing moments with her camera.

Carole added, “She was completely creative; she never stopped creating.”

Just ten months before she passed away, Diane shared how Carole had helped her fulfill a lifelong ambition: releasing her first solo album, “First Christmas.”

Diane announced on Instagram in November 2024 that her first holiday single, ‘First Christmas,’ will be released on Friday, November 29th. She expressed her excitement, saying she couldn’t believe the moment had finally arrived.

She added, “SO EXCITED TO SHARE THIS SONG WITH YOU ALL.”

Diane had always dreamed of becoming a nightclub singer, a creative goal she finally reached. She shared this with Richard Crouse in a 2014 interview, explaining it was a childhood ambition.

For Carole, collaborating on “First Christmas” with Diane are memories she will always hold close.

“She so loved recording this song,” she recalled. “She was almost childlike about it.”

She said the singer was incredibly genuine and really felt the song while performing it. As a talented actress, she also conveyed the emotion through her performance, even to the point of tearing up. Overall, it was a beautiful performance.
