It’s frustrating to see HBO Max removing almost a dozen DC movies. This isn’t the first time DC content has disappeared from the platform without a clear explanation. A few years ago, Warner Bros. cancelled the *Batgirl* movie, which caused a lot of upset among fans who were excited to watch it on HBO Max.
Starting October 31st, several Superman and Batman animated movies will no longer be available for streaming. These include *Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons*, *The Death of Superman*, *Reign of the Supermen*, *Superman/Batman: Public Enemies*, *Superman: Man of Tomorrow*, *Superman: Red Son*, and *Superman: Unbound*. Although they may not be the most famous titles, they’re all enjoyable films, and *Superman: Unbound* and *Superman: Battle of the Super Sons* both received perfect scores from Rotten Tomatoes.
Why Is HBO Max Removing So Many DC Films?

Often, content removals from streaming services come down to financial decisions or licensing agreements with other platforms. However, this situation seems different. HBO has become the central hub for DC content recently, making a simple financial reason less likely. It appears this removal is connected to James Gunn’s new vision for the DC Universe and his plans for the future. To build excitement for the new *Superman* movie, the streaming service highlighted characters who will appear in upcoming DCU shows and films – including Lobo, Supergirl, and Clayface. But shortly after, several episodes were taken down from shows like *Titans* (Season 2, Episode 13) and *Justice League* (Season 2, Episode 3).
James Gunn responded to the vanished episodes on X (formerly Twitter) by saying he doesn’t know where they came from or who posted them, and that they weren’t important. Some speculate the episodes contained spoilers for upcoming plans, which might explain why they—and now the *Superman* movies—were removed. This situation seems less extreme than what Warner Bros. did with *Batgirl*, and it’s possible we’ll see elements of those storylines reappear in future DC projects.
