2025 has been an amazing year for Stephen King fans, and there’s plenty more to look forward to! King has released a variety of projects, including the films *The Monkey*, *The Life of Chuck*, and *The Long Walk*, as well as the TV series *The Institute*. He also published a new novel, *Never Flinch*, bringing back the popular character Holly Gibney. Coming soon are HBO’s *It: Welcome to Derry*, a prequel to the classic horror story, and Edgar Wright’s adaptation of *The Running Man*.
The highly anticipated film *The Running Man* just released a new trailer, and it looks set to continue the strong momentum of 2025 releases. Directed by Edgar Wright and starring Glen Powell, the movie is a thrilling action story set in a dark future. Powell plays Ben Richards, a contestant in a dangerous game show where he’s hunted by assassins for a month, all for the entertainment of a captivated audience. His goal is simple: survive, and win a life-altering amount of money. The new trailer showcases the intense action, with Powell convincingly portraying a man on the run – and bearing a striking resemblance to Tom Cruise – amidst a series of explosive and exciting scenes.
In addition to Dave Bautista as the lead, *The Running Man* features a strong cast including Colman Domingo as the game show host, Josh Brolin as the producer, Lee Pace as a hunter, and Michael Cera as a rebel who aids the main character while he’s on the run. The new trailer highlights all of this and delivers both excitement and humor.
The Running Man Looks Like Another Strong Stephen King Adaptation
Stephen King, writing as Richard Bachman, first published *The Running Man* in 1982. It was made into a movie in 1987 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, but the film took significant liberties with the story. While the movie is enjoyable as a classic 80s action film, it strayed from the darker, more realistic tone of King’s original work. A key change was setting the story within a contained game show arena, which diminished the impact of the story’s original, open-world setting.
From what I’ve seen of Wright’s new film, it feels like he’s really stayed true to the original story, but with his signature flair. It’s not *quite* as dark and realistic as the book – honestly, I think that’s a smart move to appeal to a wider audience. The book delves pretty deep into the character’s motivations and the bigger issues at play, but a movie needs to balance that. What really stands out is Wright’s energetic style – the action feels really dynamic, and the open locations make everything feel a little more unpredictable. He’s also thrown in some really clever humor, which I always appreciate. Powell is absolutely perfect for the role; he’s got so much charisma and charm, and he’s fantastic in the action sequences. Plus, seeing him in disguise again after *Hit Man* was a stroke of genius – it really worked for him in that film, and it’s brilliant here too.
Edgar Wright’s new film seems like a return to his popular style, after his last movie, *Last Night in Soho*, received mixed reactions. It appears to be a crowd-pleasing thriller, and it will be interesting to see how well it performs in theaters. No Stephen King adaptation has earned over $100 million domestically since *It: Chapter Two* in 2019, but this film has the potential to break that streak with its exciting story and strong lead actor.
The Running Man will be released in theaters on November 14th, 2025.
