For more than 10 years, Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes, played by Don Cheadle, has been one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most reliable heroes. From his beginnings as Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) military representative to becoming a fully-fledged Avenger, Rhodey has consistently stood at the forefront, battling to safeguard the world. His main weapon in this battle has been the War Machine armor, a collection of armored suits that represent the militarized counterpart to Stark’s sleeker Iron Man designs. Each new iteration of the armor showcases both the technological progress of the times and Rhodey’s transformation from a soldier operating someone else’s technology to a hero shaped by his own power and selflessness.
Instead of focusing on Iron Man’s attention-grabbing suits with their eye-catching entrances and unique capabilities, War Machine armors were designed for a different role: massive firepower and dominance on the battlefield. Over the course of the “Infinity Saga,” Rhodey piloted seven significant variations of these armors, each featuring its own distinctive design, abilities, and standout moments. This ranking evaluates all seven suits based on their technological advancements, visual aesthetics, but primarily on their performance and influence in the critical battles that shaped the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
7) War Machine: Mark I (Iron Man 2)
The original War Machine armor originated from betrayal and a sense of urgency. When James Rhodes seized the Iron Man Mark II armor from an increasingly unstable Tony Stark, he passed it on to the U.S. military, who later gave it to competing arms manufacturer Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell). This led to a haphazard modification process, with Hammer Industries arming the elegant suit with a minigun, grenade launcher, and the notorious “Ex-Wife” bunker-buster missile. Instead of a harmonious design, this suit resembled more of a collection of weapons attached to a frame.
In its initial introduction, the Mark I left quite an impression, but unfortunately, it ended up being the least effective. The Hammer Tech software, vulnerable to hacking by Ivan Vanko, allowed him to manipulate Rhodey into a puppet during the movie’s climactic battle. The armor proved to be slow and its targeting systems were far from perfect, ultimately leading to its disablement in a joint effort between Iron Man and Black Widow. Despite being the original model, its disappointing performance and Rhodey’s lack of control over it during its most crucial fight make it the weakest suit in his collection.
6) Iron Patriot (Iron Man 3)
In terms of technology, the second War Machine armor represented a substantial improvement over the Mark I, owing to a more sophisticated Stark design that boasted a sleeker and more streamlined appearance compared to its forerunner. Post the alien invasion depicted in The Avengers, the U.S. government recognized the need for an armored hero. They addressed this requirement by refurbishing the War Machine Mark II armor with a patriotic color scheme, transforming it into the Iron Patriot. This red, white, and blue suit was designed as a symbol, serving as a government-endorsed hero meant to instill confidence among the public.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Iron Patriot’s history has been largely tarnished by embarrassment. In the movie “Iron Man 3,” its advanced technology was unfortunately exploited by Eric Savin (James Badge Dale), an operative from A.I.M., who used it to abduct the President of the United States (William Sadler). This left the Iron Patriot functioning as a tool for the antagonists for much of “Iron Man 3.” Rhodey eventually regained control of it to aid in the resolution, but the armor is predominantly known for being an easily manipulated symbol and a device that fell short, rather than a genuinely heroic suit.
5) War Machine: Mark II (Avengers: Age of Ultron)
Following the awkward incidents in Iron Man 3, the Mark II armor discarded its flashy Iron Patriot colors and reverted back to its original gunmetal grey and silver design, a scheme that became synonymous with the character. This is the suit donned by Rhodey when he formally became part of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes during the Battle of Sokovia. Functionally, it’s similar to the Iron Patriot armor but aesthetically, it reflects the War Machine persona, complete with its iconic shoulder-mounted minigun and arm-mounted machine guns.
This armor functioned admirably, teaming up with other Avengers while delivering intense firepower against Ultron’s (James Spader) relentless army of drones. Despite having limited screen time and no memorable moments that truly set it apart, it was a dependable and efficient suit. It signified Rhodey’s official induction into the Avengers, but ultimately played a supporting role in the grand battle. In the pantheon of War Machine suits, it holds a respectable position, though it is not particularly extraordinary.
4) War Machine: Mark III (Captain America: Civil War)
In the airport skirmish depicted in “Captain America: Civil War”, the War Machine Mark III underwent a significant enhancement, proving to be a formidable force. The new design gave it a more massive and intimidating appearance, resembling a mobile tank unlike any other. Its helmet was reshaped into a more spherical form, and it was armed with a novel non-lethal device – a potent electric stun baton. This armor was engineered for face-to-face combat with superpowered beings, playing a crucial role on Team Iron Man.
In a show of intimidating prowess, the Mark III stood its ground against Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and the rest of Team Cap. Despite this, its enduring reputation is marred by a heartbreaking instance of malfunction. As the final battle reached its peak, it was inadvertently hit by a blast from Vision’s (Paul Bettany) Mind Stone, leading to a power loss that caused it to fall from the sky. This fall nearly took Rhodey’s life and left him partially paralyzed. This devastating incident, with far-reaching effects on the character, casts a long shadow over the armor’s otherwise commendable performance.
3) War Machine: Mark VI (Avengers: Endgame)
In a world post-Snap, Tony Stark constructed for Rhodey an advanced suit after five years of refinement. This wasn’t just any suit; it was the War Machine Mark VI, boasting a slender, potent form with a modernized layout and state-of-the-art Stark nanotechnology. Designed specifically for the Time Heist mission, this armor was uniquely equipped with Quantum Realm technology. This enabled Rhodey to traverse both time and space alongside his fellow Avengers during their mission.
The suit was the result of countless years spent researching and developing, showcasing the peak of Stark and Banner’s (Mark Ruffalo) collective brilliance. Regrettably, it has yet to engage in a real fight, as its combat history is non-existent. Additionally, the Mark VI succumbed swiftly when Thanos unleashed a devastating missile attack on the Avengers Compound, a sight that was never seen again. Despite its undeniable technological edge and pivotal part in the mission that preserved the universe, its battle inexperience prevents it from achieving higher recognition.
2) War Machine: Mark IV (Avengers: Infinity War)
In the instance when Thanos’ forces invaded Earth, Rhodey unveiled an armored version specifically designed for full-scale warfare – the War Machine Mark IV. Unlike its predecessor Mark III, this suit traded some bulk for a colossal array of destructive weaponry. The armor was heavily armed, with a prominent digital camouflage missile pod on its back that could launch a volley of explosives. During the Battle of Wakanda, it played a pivotal role in defending against the relentless wave of Outriders.
In the heat of the fourth incarnation of War Machine’s armor, I embodied the ultimate manifestation of the “more firepower” ethos that characterizes our hero. This battle-tested warrior, relentless in its pursuit, decimated countless alien adversaries and stood as a pillar of support for our ground troops. It’s no wonder that the spectacle of its missile pods obliterating the enemy ranks is one of the most awe-inspiring demonstrations of force from any hero in the entire conflict. The Mark IV earns such high praise due to its exceptional combat prowess and a design tailor-made for the grand-scale warfare of “Infinity War”.
1) War Machine: Mark V (Avengers: Endgame)
Following the destruction of Mark VI, Rhodey adorned a fresh suit for the climactic battle against Thanos, embodying the pinnacle of War Machine design. Unlike its predecessor, the Mark V was a hulking armor-clad titan that bore resemblance to a mech rather than a conventional suit. It boasted an aesthetically pleasing color scheme, combining the traditional War Machine grey with the red and blue of Iron Patriot, resulting in a unique appearance. Crucially, it was heavily armed with colossal cannons, missile launchers, and laser weaponry.
Without a shadow of a doubt, Rhodey’s War Machine Mark V armor is unquestionably his strongest and most remarkable suit ever crafted. In the heat of the MCU’s climactic battle, it was like a tank on foot, standing side by side with the mightiest Marvel heroes in the cosmos. Not only did it endure the brunt of the conflict, but it also inflicted massive damage upon Thanos’ formidable forces. Its exceptional design, immense power, and outstanding performance during the struggle for the universe’s destiny make the War Machine Mark V indisputably the crown jewel of Rhodey’s armory.
