After five seasons and almost 100 episodes, FOX has cancelled the animated series *The Great North*. Now is a great time to catch up on what you may have missed! Created by Wendy Molyneux, Lizzie Molyneux, and Minty Lewis, the show quickly became a highlight of FOX’s Animation Domination lineup since it premiered in 2021. What set *The Great North* apart was its focus on kindness and its ability to leave viewers feeling good – a rare quality in today’s television landscape.
Now that *The Great North* has been cancelled, watching it again feels a little sad. The show really deserved more viewers while it was airing, but it’s also possible that renewed interest could lead to a revival. Canceled shows sometimes get a second chance, so if you’re curious, you can now stream *The Great North* on Hulu. Here are ten excellent episodes to get you started.
10). Sexi Moose Adventure (Season 1, Episode 1)
If you’re looking to start watching *The Great North*, the first episode is the perfect place to begin. Unlike many animated series that take a few episodes to find their footing, this show immediately establishes a clear and charming tone. It centers around a loving, tight-knit family in the Alaskan town of Lone Moose, who have learned to support each other even after their mother left years ago.
What really makes the show engaging is a playful, over-the-top anxiety that appears as a mischievous moose causing trouble throughout the first episode. It’s a delightful and comforting way to begin the series.
9). My Fart Will Go On Adventure (Season 1, Episode 11)
The first season concluded with a satisfying finale that tied everything together. Throughout the season, we’re introduced to the Tobin and Shaw families, and it was lovely to see them all unite for Wolf and Honeybee’s wedding – a Titanic-themed celebration reflecting the couple’s love of movies. Adding another layer to the story, the Tobins attempted to orchestrate a second fake wedding to prevent the children’s estranged mother from attending, but their efforts were in vain as she didn’t appear.
The show beautifully captures a mix of hopeful resilience and gentle acceptance of life’s difficulties, highlighting how this family’s strength comes from their unwavering support for one another.
8). Slide & Wet-Judice Adventure (Season 2, Episode 21)
Wolf Tobin is a very anxious person who often overestimates his own abilities, which usually backfires. This is a recurring theme in the show, and some of the best episodes highlight how his self-confidence leads to trouble. For example, convinced that water parks are unlucky because he’s repeatedly lost his swim trunks there, Wolf opts for a less-than-ideal local swimming spot while the rest of his family enjoys the water park. While everyone else has fun at the park, it’s Wolf’s separate adventure that’s the most memorable.
Wolf finds himself in a tricky situation – he falls into a hole and struggles to climb out, with predictably chaotic results. This episode really showcases what makes Wolf such a unique and memorable character, setting him apart from the rest of the cast.
7). Say It Again, Ham Adventure (Season 2, Episode 20)
Ham Tobin is a fantastic character, and his episode, “Say It Again, Ham Adventure,” is particularly well-done. The show always presented Ham’s sexuality as a normal part of who he is, without making a fuss about it. This episode explores Ham’s wish that he’d had a more dramatic coming-out experience. While his family has always been immediately accepting and supportive whenever he tried to come out in the past, he now playfully wonders if he missed out on a significant milestone in the process. He appreciates being loved for who he is, but also feels a little curious about what a bigger reveal might have been like.
Oh my gosh, things get *crazy* after that! The family tries to fix things by dragging him to visit this awful aunt, and she completely loses it and holds everyone hostage! It’s a total rollercoaster, but it ends with the family giving Ham an even *bigger* coming-out moment than he ever imagined, and it’s just so heartwarming. Honestly, this show was amazing at blending total silliness with genuine emotion, and this storyline really nails that balance.
6). Cillian Me Softly Adventure (Season 3, Episode 2)
One of the things that makes *The Great North* unique over its five seasons is the town of Lone Moose, Alaska. Many episodes center around the town’s quirky traditions and practices, which seem strange to outsiders but are deeply important to the residents. A good example is their yearly disaster preparedness day, and in one episode, Moon Tobin causes everyone to prepare for a dinosaur attack!
I really enjoyed watching how the town’s residents mixed and matched in different scenes – the interactions were just hilarious. It really highlights what’s so good about this show; everyone has a knack for comedy and plays off each other brilliantly. Honestly, it’s a really self-contained and fun episode, definitely worth watching.
5.) For Whom the Smell Tolls (Season 3, Episodes 21 & 22)
Some of the strongest episodes of *The Great North* bring the whole town together to face a common challenge. The Season 3 finale, “For Whom the Smell Tolls,” is a special two-part episode – the only one of its kind in the series – with a large-scale story involving many characters. While Judy Tobin tries to enjoy her prom, a mysterious smell spreads throughout town, and unexpected dangers begin to emerge.
This week’s episode of *The Great North* is packed with wild events – from huge piles of spoiled meat to a pizzly bear encounter, and even the threat of an exploding underground bunker. There’s plenty of claustrophobic tunnel exploration and, as always, lots of laughs. It’s arguably the show’s most ambitious episode yet, but it still feels true to the series’ established style and world.
4). Any Court in a Storm Adventure (Season 4, Episode 12)
The animated series *The Great North* really shines when the Tobin family is stuck at home. When a blizzard hits, everyone starts to lose it a little, and the show gets hilariously chaotic. The episode “Code Enough Said Adventure” was a great start, but “Any Court in a Storm Adventure” takes things to a whole new level of silliness. It builds on the courtroom setting from the first episode, adding even more quirky characters and Beef’s increasingly desperate attempts to control the situation – this time, by pretending to be a ship captain. Of course, things quickly spiral out of control, and the family nearly turns on each other before the storm finally clears. It’s a wonderfully wacky and entertaining glimpse into the lives of the Tobins.
3). Am I the Ice Hole? Adventure (Season 4, Episode 20)
Honeybee Shaw-Tobin consistently delivers entertaining stories, and this episode, “Am I the Ice Hole?”, is a standout. It’s a rare pairing, but Honeybee, feeling homesick and missing her dad, seeks companionship with Beef. Despite warnings from friends, she joins him on an ice fishing trip, leading to a heartfelt conversation where they both share their feelings of loss and longing.
I noticed Beef really wanted to connect with her, and it seemed like she was his last hope for finding someone to share his passion. But spending time together actually brought them closer, and you could really see why they’re both such valued parts of the family. It was just a really heartwarming moment.
2). Serendipi-Beef Adventure (Season 5, Episode 17)
Despite the wonderful Tobin family and the lovable Lone Moose, many fans agree that Beef is the most compelling character in *The Great North*. The show often centers around Beef dealing with the emotional fallout from his ex-wife leaving, and his search for love is a key part of many memorable episodes. This storyline reached its peak in the final season with “Serendipi-Beef Adventure,” where Beef hoped to find lasting love with someone special under a rare, once-in-20-years comet.
After carefully considering his choices and worrying about repeating past mistakes from his ex-wife’s experience, he finally finds clarity through his son, Moon. The series culminates in a satisfying and complete resolution, bringing everything full circle after five seasons of compelling storytelling.
1). It’s a Beef-derful Life (Season 5, Episode 22)
The final episode of *The Great North* really captures what the show is all about. It centers on Beef questioning if he’s lived a life full of adventure, as his town expects. However, through a look back at his past, he understands he’s been a consistent and important presence in many people’s lives. It’s a touching ending for Beef’s character, and it works so well because we’ve seen this town and its people experience so much throughout the series.
Watching the final episode felt like getting a little moment with each character – they even managed to work in those little things that made them unique one last time. And the ending was perfect: Alanis Morissette, who’d been showing up throughout the series, performed a new version of “Thank U” during the extended credits. Honestly, it was much more impactful if you’d been watching all along. It’s hard to imagine a better send-off for *The Great North*.
