With the introduction of Ironheart, one of Marvel Comics’ formidable villains, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is a plethora of other significant characters waiting to make their live-action debuts. In the series ‘Ironheart’, Dominique Thorne’s Riri Williams engaged in battle with Parker Robbins’ Hood and even encountered a villain that has been hinted at for several years within the MCU. Following an unforeseen reference in 2024’s ‘Agatha All Along’, it was only a matter of time before this ominous adversary appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time. CAUTION: SPOILERS for Ironheart lie ahead.
In the climax of “Ironheart,” after much anticipation, Mephisto, the legendary Marvel Comics villain, was introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Actor Sacha Baron Cohen portrayed him brilliantly, captivating audiences with his performance. It’s unveiled that he is the Hood’s benefactor and has entered into a questionable agreement with Riri Williams, paving the way for compelling and mysterious storylines in the upcoming MCU installments. These tales might introduce some of Mephisto’s most beloved comic book companions, characters we’ve been eagerly waiting to appear in the MCU for quite some time.
Ghost Rider
1972 saw the debut of Johnny Blaze in Marvel Comics’ “Marvel Spotlight #5”. Originally a daredevil motorcyclist, he transformed into the anti-hero Ghost Rider after linking with the Spirit of Vengeance, Zarathos, following a pact with Mephisto to save his foster father Crash Simpson from terminal cancer. Despite giving his soul to Mephisto, Crash still perished during a stunt, and although Roxanne broke Blaze’s deal with Mephisto through her affection, it was already too late as Zarathos persisted, and the Spirit of Vengeance took over Blaze to fulfill Mephisto’s bidding, returning wickedness to Hell.
Different portrayals of Ghost Rider have been previously enacted by Nicolas Cage and Gabriel Luna in live-action, but the character hasn’t officially appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) yet. There are rumors that Norman Reedus, Ryan Gosling, Keanu Reeves, and others might step into the role of Johnny Blaze’s Ghost Rider within the MCU. With Mephisto now involved, it seems that the debut of the Spirit of Vengeance could be imminent. If this happens, there’s a chance Ghost Rider could assume leadership of the MCU’s anticipated Midnight Sons team, which includes Moon Knight, Man-Thing, Blade, and other supernatural heroes, forming an Avengers-like group focused on the supernatural realm.
Blackheart
In the anticipated series Agatha All Along, it’s rumored that Blackheart will make an appearance, prior to Aubrey Plaza being unveiled as Death. Born from the dark energy that amassed in Christ’s Crown, New York, due to centuries of violence, Blackheart is Mephisto’s offspring. First introduced in Marvel Comics’ Daredevil #270 back in 1989, Mephisto attempted to instill his malevolence, but was ultimately impressed by humanity’s free will. After attempting to seduce characters like Daredevil, Spider-Man, and others, Blackheart grew fascinated with humans. Since then, he has spent years fighting against his father and other heroes, making his anticipated debut in the MCU a potential source of intriguing conflicts for the franchise’s most compelling new adversary.
The Kindred Twins
Originally known as the Stacy twins in the 2004 issue of “The Amazing Spider-Man #509”, characters later referred to as the Kindred Twins, or simply the Kindred, were initially believed to be the offspring of Norman Osborn and Gwen Stacy. However, during the 2021 “Sinister War” event, it was unveiled that they were actually clones of Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, re-created by Mephisto and transformed into demonic entities. Given Mephisto’s history as a formidable adversary to Spider-Man in Marvel Comics, it would be exciting to see this villain face off against Tom Holland’s Spider-Man alongside the Kindred Twins in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” or beyond.
Norrin Radd’s Silver Surfer
Julia Garner is set to play Shalla-Bal, the Silver Surfer from an alternate universe in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” yet fans are eager to witness Norrin Radd as the Herald of Galactus within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In Marvel Comics, Norrin Radd has a rich background with Mephisto, where the demon persistently attempts to seize the Silver Surfer’s soul and power. The future for the Silver Surfer and Galactus (Ralph Ineson) following “First Steps” remains uncertain, but it would be thrilling to see Norrin Radd join the MCU, paving the way for his ongoing conflict with Mephisto.
Phil Coulson & The Squadron Supreme of America
Clark Gregg played the role of Phil Coulson, a loyal SHIELD agent, across all Phase 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He sacrificed his life during the fight against Loki in The Avengers (2012). However, he reappeared in Marvel Television’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but this show doesn’t align with the main MCU timeline, so Coulson hasn’t officially been resurrected within the franchise yet. In Marvel Comics, Deadpool was responsible for killing Phil Coulson during the Secret Empire event in 2017, but he returned to life afterwards after striking a deal with Mephisto.
In 2018’s Avengers (Volume 8) #10, Phil Coulson made a comeback, accompanied by replicas of the Squadron Supreme of America. These simulacra were now the official superheroes of the U.S., but harbored a deep-seated dislike for other heroes. It’s astounding to think that after so many years, Coulson would resurface as an agent of Mephisto, following up on the hint dropped in Agatha All Along regarding Nicholas Scratch’s destiny. This would also signify Clark Gregg’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a bang. Moreover, this scenario might introduce characters like Hyperion, Power Princess, and Nighthawk, who have long been rumored to make an appearance.
