PlayStation and AMD recently shared a video detailing new technologies developed through their Project Amethyst collaboration, suggesting these advancements will be included in the hardware of Sony’s next gaming console.
In a recent video, Mark Cerny suggested that this new technology could be included in a future console, likely the PS6, within the next few years, giving us a general timeframe for its release.
New reports and speculation suggest the next PlayStation console might launch in 2027, around seven years after the PS5’s release. This timing would follow the typical pattern of previous console generations.
So, if all of this is accurate, we could have PS6 consoles flanking our TVs in about two years.
This timing fits with Sony’s usual console release schedule. However, it seems a bit early to be discussing the PlayStation 6 right now.
The PlayStation 5 has had a unique launch and lifespan so far. It arrived during the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused problems for game development and made it difficult to produce enough consoles to meet the huge demand for home entertainment.
The PlayStation 5 overcame a slow start and has ultimately been a big win for Sony. However, it hasn’t quite reached the same peak popularity as the PlayStation 4 did at its most successful point.
It’s been amazing seeing the PS4 still get love even with the PS5 being out for so long! Sure, there have been some incredible games that *only* came to PS5, but what I’ve really noticed is a ton more games being released on both PS4 and PS5 at the same time. It feels like developers are focusing on making games accessible to as many players as possible, which is awesome.
Games such as Gran Turismo 7, God of War Ragnarok, and Horizon Forbidden West were fantastic demonstrations of what the PS5 could do, but they were also created for the previous PlayStation console, which meant they could reach a much larger audience.
For the past five years, games have often been released on both PlayStation 4 and 5 at the same time. While the PS5 has some great exclusive titles like Returnal, Astro Bot, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, continuing to support the older console has made it feel like the PS5 hasn’t fully established its own identity, especially for dedicated fans.
Since the PlayStation 6 might be released in just a few years, the PS5 may not have enough time to become truly successful. The PS4 is still popular, and the PS5 could quickly be overshadowed by the next generation of consoles.
The good news is that the PlayStation 5 will probably continue to receive support even after the PlayStation 6 is released, just like the PlayStation 4 still does now.
While some people will always rush to buy the newest consoles as soon as they’re released, it’s becoming increasingly common for gamers to be happy with a PS5 and simply upgrade to a PS6 when they feel the time is right – maybe even several years after it comes out.
The slow and steady approach seems to be why the PS4 has remained popular, and we anticipate a similar pattern with the PS5. It’s possible we’re moving away from a system where new consoles completely replace older ones.
We don’t have many confirmed details about the PlayStation 6 yet, but rumors are plentiful. There’s a lot of discussion about what Sony’s next console will be like, with reports ranging from technical specifications to a possible handheld version alongside the main console.
And the cost is also a big question – it will probably be expensive, but currently seems a bit less so than the upcoming Xbox.
Now that we’ve covered everything, we’d love to hear your thoughts on the next PlayStation – the PS6. Are you looking forward to it? Do you plan on buying one when it comes out? What features are you hoping for, and do you think it’s the right time for a new console?
