Fans were thrilled to hear Kelly Clarkson would be returning to *The Voice* for its new season. Sadly, shortly after filming began, her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, passed away after a long fight with cancer, and she had to take a break from the show. Now, someone involved with the competition has shared details about how her absence affected filming and what the crew was told when she came back.
Brandon Blackstock, the ex-husband of Kelly Clarkson, passed away on August 7th at the age of 48. This occurred five years after Clarkson filed for divorce. Although their split was difficult, they continued to co-parent their two children. Following his death, Clarkson received strong support from *The Voice*, allowing her to prioritize her family. Sources told The Sun that the situation did cause some disruption to the show’s filming schedule.
Brandon’s death caused delays with some important season elements, such as filming and promotional shoots. However, the team worked hard to catch up, and everything eventually got back on schedule.
Earlier reports suggested the show was considering replacements for Kelly Clarkson, with Miley Cyrus and Kelsea Ballerini mentioned as possibilities. Ballerini has subbed in for Clarkson before – during Season 20 when Clarkson was ill – and will be a coach on Season 27, as well as a Battle Advisor for Michael Bublé’s team in Season 28.
However, a source suggests production didn’t begin until Kelly Clarkson was back. Once she returned, the crew reportedly received a stern warning, which went something like this:
When Kelly returned, the entire production team was instructed not to mention Brandon, not even to express their condolences. Everyone understood she was there to work and didn’t want to be constantly reminded of the tragedy, as it would be too upsetting. The crew all care about Kelly and wanted to respect her wishes, so they readily agreed to avoid the subject.
It’s easy to see why Kelly Clarkson would be struggling – constantly being reminded of her ex-husband’s passing would make it impossible to concentrate on coaching aspiring singers. However, a source shared that despite the difficult situation, her colleagues showed her a lot of support while still maintaining a professional working relationship.
If the producers asked Kelly Clarkson to do something specific, it’s likely they’d ask Reba McEntire the same thing. Reba, a country music icon, is currently a coach on Season 28 of The Voice, which is airing now. She recently honored her late stepson and has reportedly taken a break from filming, as Seasons 28 and 29 are being filmed at the same time.
As a viewer, I’m curious to see how “The Voice” handles Reba McEntire’s departure as the Battle rounds continue. New episodes are dropping every Monday and Tuesday at 8 p.m. Eastern on NBC, and if you miss them, they’ll be available to stream on Peacock the very next day.
