Superman’s 10 Best Villains (That aren’t Lex Luthor), Ranked

Compared to Spider-Man and the Flash, whose rogue’s galleries are impressive, Superman’s collection of foes is second only to Batman’s and presents a formidable challenge for him. Notably, Lex Luthor stands out among these adversaries, but it’s important to remember that Superman also encounters numerous other villains. With the upcoming film generating anticipation, it seemed like an ideal opportunity to evaluate the different villains in Superman’s mythos according to their impact and threat level.

As new powers continue to enhance Superman, each villain has unique strengths and vulnerabilities to exploit when facing the Man of Steel. Some will pack a powerful punch, while others might present more personal challenges for him. From classic tales to lesser-known ones, not every major nemesis will be included in this exploration. Let’s dive right in!

10) Toyman

To begin, let me tell you about Winslow Schott Sr., also known as the Toyman – a cunning genius who loves crafting toys. But don’t be fooled by his playful creations; many of them are disguised weapons. What seems like an innocent squirt gun could easily be a real one, just hiding in plain sight. He may not always pose the greatest threat to Superman, but his style and tech make him a villain that stands out in the memory.

In later years, Winslow Jr. adopted a role similar to Toymaster, preserving his father’s legacy though not for as long. His appearance remained iconic, etching a lasting impression. Though he may not have been the initial pick for a villain, beware of him; he’ll catch you off guard when you least suspect it.

9) Silver Banshee

Although Silver Banshee isn’t traditionally considered a villain of Superman, she has been a formidable adversary for the Man of Steel over time. Siobhan Smythe is equipped with banshee-like abilities, such as creating sonic screams and controlling various sounds. Additionally, she can fly and possesses strength. What sets her apart is her power to potentially kill individuals just by gazing at them if she knows their name. She’s a formidable opponent, especially considering Superman’s exceptional hearing.

Generally speaking, she tends to act as a villain, but her relationship with Jimmy Olsen appears to have curbed her anger to some extent. There are occasional bursts of aggression, suggesting that she could potentially revert to being a villain again. However, I find the romance between these two characters intriguing and enjoy seeing her more often. It’s an unusual pairing, but I’m definitely on board with it.

8) Lobo

Among the top contenders for Superman’s greatest adversaries, Lobo undeniably earns a spot. Known for his extraordinary healing abilities and bloodlust that borders on recreation, this character stands out. Engaging in combat with Superman is an accomplishment in itself, but to Lobo, it’s merely a game. Typically encountered as a bounty hunter, Lobo doesn’t harbor any personal grudge against Superman. It’s just the way things work. Despite acknowledging his own insanity, Lobo will gladly confront Superman for money, women, and space dolphins. Furthermore, he is always a delight to fans as well.

7) Doomsday

In summary, the antagonist who harbors intense animosity towards the Man of Steel (again) is none other than Doomsday. Originating from a Kryptonian science project that grew stronger after each demise, it was Doomsday who ultimately claimed the life of Superman in the renowned tale The Death of Superman. Indeed, Doomsday has made several resurrections and displayed remarkable feats of power, predominantly serving as a formidable muscle to challenge Superman or the Justice League.

Recently, during Joshua Williamson’s run, Doomsday has been reintroduced as the Time Trapper, which has given him a chance for some substantial character development. Now that he can articulate full sentences in his newer form, Doomsday has become more intriguing. I’m hoping he continues to use his Time Trapper identity because it’s provided him with something fresh and exciting to explore after a long time.

6) Parasite

Following a bite from a radioactive donut, Rudy Jones underwent a startling metamorphosis into the villain known as Parasite. Now, he subsists on the vitality of others, viewing Superman as his most delectable prey. The more sustenance he consumes, the stronger he becomes. In certain situations, he can even momentarily assimilate Superman’s abilities. With one of the most stylish and menacing rogue costumes, Parasite is a chilling embodiment of creepiness.

Rudy, with his constant internal struggles, presents an intriguing adversary for Superman. Instead of relying on brute force, he tends to employ his intellect in their battles, making each encounter distinct. Though not inherently evil, his desires often overpower him, influencing his actions.

Rudy is a complex character who isn’t all bad. He’s different from other villains because he uses his brain instead of his brawn to fight Superman. His negative impulses sometimes take control, but he’s not truly evil at heart.

5) Bizarro

At position “e” (which is actually the last letter in the word “five”), we don’t have Bizarro. I apologize if my joke was lame (the reference is to the fact that “e” is backward from “A,” the first letter of “Superman”). However, the reverse-speaking counterpart of Superman is our next option. Despite his unpredictable intelligence and powers that are slightly off balance, Bizarro takes the following spot. He’s essentially a brawler version of Superman and even has his own unique lore that’s so well-known that “Bizarro-world” became a widely used term, even on the popular TV show Seinfeld.

Bizarro, with his icy gaze and fiery exhales, is undeniably one of Superman’s quirkier foes, whether he admits it or not. Essentially a captive of his own psyche, Bizarro functions less as an arch-nemesis and more as a pawn for greater threats. The main issue I have with him is that his speech is often unclear, but beyond that, he’s a timeless character.

4) Metallo

Introducing what appears to be our initial ruthless adversary – Metallo. Fueled by a kryptonite core, this mechanical menace poses one of the greatest dangers to Superman. If he makes an appearance in Superman: Unlimited, it could make for a challenging battle for the Man of Steel. Design-wise, his half-melted skin gives him a resemblance to the Terminator, specifically the character from James Cameron’s film, not Deathstroke.

Yearning to regain a physical form, Metallo is relentless in preventing others from becoming cyborgs like himself. His motivation isn’t just powered by kryptonite, but also by his animosity towards Superman specifically. He believes he deserves more prominent roles as the main antagonist instead of being relegated to secondary positions again. Despite this, he remains an invaluable character.

3) General Zod

It seems there’s not much truth in being the last survivor of Krypton when General Zod is in play. Whether he’s present or imprisoned in the Phantom Zone, this formidable military leader hailing from the same planet as Superman serves as a dark mirror image of him. With similar powers and a ruthless desire to dominate Earth, Zod indeed poses a genuine danger to Superman.

According to his command, everyone must bow down to Zod or face death. Although Zod poses a significant danger to Earth, fortunately we have Superman who consistently defeats him and banishes him back to the Phantom Zone. And I must admit, I personally find his grey suit with goggles and oversized coat to be his most stylish appearance. Perhaps it’s just me, but that outfit was definitely his best.

2) Darkseid

In the DC universe, Darkseid ranks second, driven solely by unadulterated hatred. Originally introduced as the main antagonist of the New Gods by Jack Kirby, Darkseid stands as the ultimate entity within the DC universe. Repeatedly challenging Superman earns him this position. With his fearsome omega beams capable of locating any danger, he is one of the most formidable forces in the cosmos.

Darkseid’s malice has sculpted his realm into what’s known as the Absolute Universe – a testament to how wicked he truly is. At the moment, he doesn’t seem to pose a direct threat, but being beyond the multiverse grants him certain advantages. However, I can’t help but worry about the day when he decides to wage war against our primary reality once more.

1) Brainiac

It was never in question that it would be Brainiac, given his reputation as Superman’s cleverest adversary with numerous adaptations. Although not as chaotic as his Absolute version, Brainiac is characterized by cold calculation and a relentless thirst for knowledge. With the ambition to preserve the world’s greatest cities, one city at a time in miniature form, he is always seeking new information. In some portrayals, he even destroyed Krypton, instilling fear in all beings.

Almost all characters on the previous list showed some level of compassion, but Brainiac and Darkseid stand out as exceptions. Brainiac takes the top position not just due to being a longstanding adversary of Superman since his debut, but also because his spaceship, shaped like a skull, is undeniably cool.
