In the latest Marvel Television series, Ironheart, two of Iron Man’s underutilized antagonists from Phase 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe were given a second chance at redemption. Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) squared off against Parker Robbins’ Hood (Anthony Ramos), but that wasn’t all. The series also introduced additional formidable villains for the MCU’s newest armored hero, one of whom was Ezekiel Stane (Alden Ehrenreich). This character references Iron Man’s original nemesis who was underutilized in Phase 1, and his presence, along with another villain, significantly enhanced their storyline.
Ezekiel Stane initially met Ironheart under the alias Joe McGillicuddy, a tech dealer on the black market who assisted Riri Williams in building her new Ironheart armor. It wasn’t long before he unveiled his true identity as Obadiah Stane’s son (the antagonist from the first phase of Iron Man). This revelation came to light when Williams inadvertently got him arrested. Later, Ezekiel was freed by Parker Robbins and underwent enhancements with bionics and technology, mirroring his father’s villainous path while also drawing inspiration from another Iron Man adversary, Ivan Vanko, by acquiring electrical powers similar to those demonstrated in ‘Iron Man 2’.
Obadiah Stane’s Iron Monger and Ivan Vanko’s Whiplash are remembered as two underutilized villains in Marvel Studios’ history, serving as stepping stones to introduce audiences to the epic superhero journeys of the MCU. In Phase 1, they presented only minor challenges to Tony Stark (portrayed by Robert Downey Jr.), but their impact is being revisited in Phase 5 through the introduction of Zeke Stane. Zeke inherits both the physical strength and power of his father, who donned the Iron Monger armor, as well as electrical abilities similar to Whiplash, making him an ideal opponent for Ironheart.
In Marvel Comics, Ezekiel Stane assumes the role of Iron Monger after getting cybernetic upgrades to retaliate against Tony Stark for his father’s demise. However, Marvel Studios has reworked this development as Zeke merely played a villain under the manipulation of Parker Robbins, while being generally supportive towards Riri Williams. Now, with Riri being swayed by Mephisto (Sacha Baron Cohen entering the MCU), it remains to be seen how their relationship will unfold in future Marvel Cinematic Universe storylines.
Ezekiel Stane exceeded the original villains in portraying both Iron Monger and Whiplash. He demonstrated his might by effortlessly overpowering Riri Williams’ Ironheart, a feat that neither Iron Monger nor Whiplash accomplished against Iron Man. However, Zeke chose not to deliver the decisive blow against Riri, which would have left her defenseless otherwise. In other words, if he had gone for the final strike, Riri, the inventive heroine, would have been finished off.
It was delightful to witness the former Iron Man adversaries, who had previously been underutilized, receive acknowledgement in Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 5. Now, it’s thrilling to speculate about which overlooked villains could potentially get updated versions in the future.
