How to get Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur in Pokémon Legends: Z-A explained

The newest Pokémon game, Pokémon Legends Z-A, is set in Lumiose City and features a wide variety of Pokémon. While many familiar creatures will return, the original starter Pokémon from the very first games still hold a special place for fans.

Okay, so the classic starters – Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle – are in this new RPG, which is awesome! You can actually snag one pretty early on, but here’s the catch: you can only choose *one* to start with. I’ll walk you through how to find them, pick your favorite, and then how to eventually get the others too.

And, needless to say, there’s a spoiler warning in effect here for Pokémon Legends Z-A.

How to get Charmander, Squirtle or Bulbasaur in Pokémon Legends Z-A

To find your old friends, you’ll need to finish some tasks for Mable and beat the Lida battle in Main Mission 08.

Okay, so after you beat Lida, head to any Pokémon Center. That’s when Mable will reach out and ask me to come to her office – she’ll give me a new quest called ‘A Call From Mable’!

This adventure gives you the chance to choose one of the original Kanto Pokémon starters – Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle! Just like in the very first Pokémon games, you’ll only be able to pick one. I’m choosing Squirtle!

It’s nice that Mable offers you a first-generation starter Pokémon, but you’ll likely want to catch the other two as well – particularly because their Mega Evolution forms have returned in Legends Z-A.

You can collect all of them, but you’ll need to complete the main game first. Finishing the game unlocks a special final area where you can find the last two to complete your collection.
