Over the decades of DC Comics history, the Justice League has included a huge number of heroes. It’s easily the most prominent team in the DC Universe, consistently appearing in the comics. While a few heroes are famous members, many others are less well-known. As James Gunn develops the new DC Universe, he’ll likely expand the Justice League with new characters, building a strong and unified team for the movies and TV shows.
With the success of *Superman*, a team-up movie featuring other heroes feels like the next logical step for the DC Universe. The first film already hinted at who might join the Justice League. However, some comic book members of the team just wouldn’t fit into this new universe, and we probably won’t see them appear in the movies. This is partly due to practical challenges, and partly because certain characters haven’t aged well with changing social norms. Ultimately, there are some classic Justice League heroes who likely won’t be part of the DCU.
5) John Constantine

John Constantine is a popular DC character—an occult detective and demon hunter from Liverpool, also known as Hellblazer—but despite being a member of the Justice League in some comic book versions, he probably won’t be included in the new DC Universe. While he’s gained a dedicated following, he hasn’t quite reached the mainstream popularity of other DC heroes.
A key reason why Constantine won’t appear in the main DC Universe (DCU) is because Keanu Reeves is returning to play the character in a separate DC film that isn’t connected to the DCU’s ongoing story. Having two live-action versions of Constantine so close together probably wouldn’t work well, particularly since Reeves’ portrayal is very popular. Also, Constantine’s stories are usually quite dark and gritty, which doesn’t really fit with James Gunn’s generally lighter and more fun approach to the DCU, making it unlikely we’ll see Hellblazer as part of the main universe.
4) Matrix

Superman is involved in several DC Universe (DCU) projects, including a *Supergirl* movie. While Supergirl’s role in the 2025 film was small, it confirmed her as Superman’s cousin, staying true to the original comic books. This likely means another DC character, Matrix, won’t appear in the DCU. Matrix was created as a new version of Supergirl after a major DC Comics storyline, and though she’s often associated with the character, she has a completely different origin story.
The original version of the character Matrix, created as a stand-in for Supergirl, doesn’t fit into the new DC Universe being built by James Gunn. Since Gunn’s DCU seems focused on a direct family connection between Supergirl and another hero, this earlier take on Matrix is unnecessary. It’s unlikely we’ll see this version of Matrix appear in the DCU, even though she was a Justice League member in the comics.
3) Tasmanian Devil

Tasmanian Devil is a lesser-known hero from DC’s Justice League. Created in 1977, he’s a complicated character with a winding history. He’s an Australian metahuman who is gay and a pacifist, and can transform into a beast. He originally fought crime in Tasmania before joining the Global Guardians, and eventually the Justice League. Despite his long history in DC Comics, Tasmanian Devil would likely be a difficult character to popularize in the DC Universe.
It would be challenging to portray this character without falling into common stereotypes, particularly given James Gunn’s preference for humor in his films. Plus, because the character isn’t widely known, introducing him might be difficult – most viewers won’t recognize Tasmanian Devil or his background. While there’s nothing stopping him from appearing in the DCU, accurately adapting his complex story would be unnecessarily complicated, so it’s unlikely we’ll see him in the franchise.
2) Snapper Carr

Snapper Carr is a DC Comics character who first appeared in 1969 and was a regular presence until 1989. He was often featured as a sort of mascot and helper to the Justice League heroes. While he can teleport, Snapper hasn’t been a major character in the DC Universe, usually appearing as a supporting player in larger storylines. However, he has occasionally been a full-fledged member of the Justice League throughout his comic book history.
Although James Gunn *could* include Snapper Carr in the DC Universe, it’s probably not going to happen. Snapper isn’t a well-known character, and frankly, he’s not particularly compelling. Plus, his teleportation ability isn’t very impressive compared to the powers of other Justice League members. While he has some appeal as a lesser-known DC hero, he doesn’t seem like a strong enough addition to the live-action films and shows.
1) Gypsy

Gypsy is a powerful and compelling DC hero who doesn’t get the recognition she deserves. However, her character’s name and backstory are unfortunately problematic, making it highly unlikely she’ll appear in modern DC adaptations. While a fascinating figure, her original portrayal simply wouldn’t work for the franchise today.
The character’s name is widely considered deeply offensive to the Romani people, who inspired her creation. Beyond that, her design and abilities rely on harmful stereotypes. Despite her potential as a hero and Justice League member, it would be best for DC to retire the character because of these problematic elements.
