Today, Pedro Pascal is a well-known figure, yet his breakout role on “Game of Thrones” still leaves him in awe. In a recent conversation with Vanity Fair, the actor reflected on his career journey so far, and it’s clear that “Game of Thrones” played a significant role in his recollections. Before his notable stint on the fantasy series, Pascal had minor TV roles and spent much time in regional theater. However, his selection for the part of Oberyn Martell in the fourth season was unexpected. Looking back now, he believes that his roles in “The Mandalorian,” “The Last of Us,” and even “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” can be traced back to this one opportunity.
Pascal expressed that “Game of Thrones” was a pivotal moment. He believes it’s the reason he’s where he is today. He can hardly believe that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, with all their options, noticed him. With his extensive background in regional theater, off-Broadway work, and television episodes, he never expected to land such a significant role during their peak popularity. To this day, he feels grateful to them for kick-starting his career.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the captivating portrayal of Oberyn Martell by the exceptionally talented Pedro Pascal. His brief appearance in “Game of Thrones” Season 4 left an indelible mark on me and countless others. The charismatic Dornish Renaissance man was adored in the novels, but Pascal breathed vibrant life into the character on screen. It’s fascinating to know that a close friend and fellow actor played a significant role in helping him secure this iconic part.
My close friend Sarah Paulson’s friend Amanda Pete played a significant role by presenting my audition tape to Benioff and Weiss. The thrill of being part of the show, given that I was already a fan, made every moment magical for me. Additionally, joining this talented cast, filming on those iconic locations while wearing an authentic costume and getting a well-crafted role – it felt almost surreal. To be there, in the throne room during Tyrion’s trial, surrounded by the main characters, was simply mind-blowing.
During that very interview, Pascal delved deeply into the technical aspects of his role, focusing significantly on his fight scene against Gregor Clegane (performed by Hafthor Björnsson). This segment offers a wealth of knowledge for enthusiasts of special effects, as Pascal took pride in sharing that he had created a good portion of the choreography himself.
In “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” set to release on July 25th, Pascal’s upcoming role won’t exhibit solar storm effects unless he has experienced one prior.
