Ever since the commencement of All-In, DC Comics has been performing exceptionally well, and among all the titles, JSA stands out as the finest team book (even surpassing Justice League Unlimited). The storyline in JSA is shaping up to be one of the best Justice Society/Injustice Society narratives in decades, or perhaps ever. Writer Jeff Lemire demonstrates a deep understanding of the Justice Society, skillfully weaving their past into the current plotline. In JSA #9, the narrative takes a significant turn as three key members of the team – Obsidian, Jakeem Thunder, and the Thunderbolt – manage to escape Qwsp’s labyrinth. Additionally, Doctor Mid-Nite II has successfully contacted the team to disclose the traitor within their ranks. Yet, the harm may have already been inflicted, as the secret the Injustice Society has long sought has finally come to light.
The ongoing struggle against the Injustice Society has put the Justice Society to its most severe test yet, dividing them into two groups: their strongest members were secluded in Surtur’s Realm, while the rest faced an internal traitor. Longtime member Wildcat sadly lost his life during combat, but eventually, they managed to reunite as an organization. Meanwhile, Johnny Sorrow has been causing discord from within the team. However, it seems that the Injustice Society’s schemes have crumbled, and the real danger to both the JSA and the world has finally surfaced.
The Injustice Society Has Been Trying to Get the Spear of Destiny
To fully grasp the actual motive behind the Injustice Society, we need to rewind to JSA #8 – the final issue of the comic series. This particular chapter was a flashback set during the last days of World War II, when the Justice Society were finally permitted access into Europe following years of being impeded by the Spear of Destiny. The team thwarted a scheme orchestrated by Wotan and Johnny Sorrow, not to control metahumans worldwide (the reason they were kept out of Europe while the Nazis possessed the Spear), but to create a portal for the Nameless Ones – cosmic entities reminiscent of Lovecraftian deities that bestowed Sorrow with his powers. Hawkman hid the Spear in his secret museum, which the Injustice Society has been attempting to locate. Alan Scott inadvertently revealed the location when Obsidian, who is actually Johnny Sorrow in disguise, questioned him about it. Wotan, who had been observing all along, instructed the remaining members of the Injustice Society to seize the Spear of Destiny from Blackhawk Island.
In the midst of these events, Doctor Mid-Nite II manages to break free from the Injustice Society’s stronghold, taking the real Obsidian with her, who remains unconscious within Qwsp’s Fifth Dimensional labyrinth. Scandal Savage attempts to halt her progress, as it is revealed that Wotan and Sorrow had promised Scandal they would eliminate her father, Vandal Savage, in exchange for their assistance; likely a similar deal was made with the rest of the Injustice Society. For a while, Scandal manages to slow Mid-Nite II down due to her blindness during daylight hours. However, once night falls and her sight is restored, she overpowers Scandal. Stranded in the snow with an unconscious teammate, Mid-Nite II uses Scandal’s communicator to reach out to the Justice Society for help. Eventually, she establishes contact with Scott and his daughter Jade, revealing Obsidian’s true allegiance and unmasking the traitor within their ranks. The stage is set for the final confrontation.
Can the Justice Society Defeat the Injustice Society Now That the Truth Is Revealed
From the debut of JSA, readers have been eagerly speculating about the true objective of the Injustice Society. Initially, it appeared as though they were employing a typical “divide and conquer” strategy, pitting the seasoned members against the newer ones, while manipulating Johnny Sorrow to act as Obsidian, preventing team unity. However, in JSA #8, we discovered that Sorrow and Wotan’s ultimate goal was to summon the Nameless Ones – beings who would indiscriminately obliterate anything in their path. This is unusual for the Injustice Society, as they typically avoid widespread destruction. Consequently, it seems highly likely that Wotan and Sorrow have been deceiving their allies, promising them ultimate power or some such enticement to enlist their assistance.
At long last, the real adversary against the Justice Society has come to light. For months they’ve found themselves entangled in a game orchestrated by Sorrow and Wotan, but now they have identified their foe and the battlefield. Yet, it seems that the Injustice Society has been nipping at their heels for quite some time. Will the Justice Society emerge victorious or will the Nameless Ones bring about their demise? If the climax of this tale is as thrilling as its opening chapters, then undeniably the readers will be the ultimate victors.
