Jacob Elordi had plenty of past performances to inspire his role as Frankenstein’s monster in Guillermo del Toro’s new film. Actors like Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee, Peter Boyle, and Robert De Niro have all famously played the creature, each bringing a unique interpretation to the screen.
I recently learned something fascinating about how Jacob Elordi prepared for *Saltburn*. He didn’t just study other actors who’d played similar roles! He actually drew a lot of inspiration from his golden retriever, Layla. It’s such an unexpected source, but he said Layla really helped him get into the character.
She behaves in a very animalistic way, interacting with the world through instinct and feeling. She’s also deeply sensitive, and I often feel like she understands everything around her – I truly see a whole world reflected in her eyes.
Layla wasn’t Elordi’s only inspiration when developing his character’s physical performance. He explained that he drew on pretty much everything he’s ever experienced to create it.
He described feeling overwhelmed by everything he’d experienced – every movie, conversation, injury, emotional low, and moment of intense happiness. He said it was just… everything.
I really connected with the physical aspects of the creature. It’s odd, but even though it’s not human, embodying it felt more natural and expressive than just being myself.

Oscar Isaac stars as the main scientist, and Jacob Elordi is also in the cast. Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and David Bradley also have important roles in the film.
Since its debut at the Venice Film Festival, the film has been getting excellent reviews. We especially loved Jacob Elordi’s performance, noting that he conveyed a lot of emotion with very little dialogue, relying instead on powerful and often moving expressions and actions.
We also noted that the film showcases over thirty years of Guillermo del Toro’s filmmaking experience, resulting in a beautifully told and deeply moving story.
