Mark Ruffalo Addresses Possibility of New Solo Hulk MCU Movie

Among the original six Avengers, Mark Ruffalo is the only actor who hasn’t starred in his own movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While a standalone Hulk film did exist, it starred Edward Norton, not Ruffalo. Ruffalo took over the role of Hulk for The Avengers and has been part of the team in several movies since then, often alongside other heroes or in a supporting capacity, like in Thor: Ragnarok. He’s scheduled to appear in next summer’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but fans are still hoping for a solo Hulk movie. Ruffalo has said that the possibility is still being discussed.

In a recent interview with *GQ*, Mark Ruffalo expressed his desire to star in a solo Hulk movie. He explained that the rights to the character are complicated, as Universal, not Marvel, owns them. While he’s not sure if it will ever happen, Ruffalo admitted he and others have discussed ideas for the film. He acknowledged that, given the number of Hulk movies already made, it’s a question of whether audiences would want another one, but he believes a well-executed solo film could be a success.

Will There Be a New Hulk Movie in the MCU?

If Mark Ruffalo and Marvel ever decide to make a standalone Hulk movie, Disney would first need to reach an agreement with Universal, which currently holds the rights to distribute new Hulk films. While Disney successfully negotiated a deal with Sony to include Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the situations aren’t quite the same. Unlike Spider-Man, Marvel Studios *can* still use the Hulk in team-up movies like *The Avengers*, which lessens the need for a deal with Universal. Ultimately, Disney/Marvel could simply avoid the complications of negotiation by choosing not to make a solo Hulk film.

The approach to the Hulk has proven successful, with Mark Ruffalo’s portrayal of Bruce Banner quickly becoming popular with fans. Even without his own dedicated movie series like some other Avengers, the Hulk has still experienced character development throughout his appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While his story hasn’t been explored as deeply as those of characters like Iron Man or Captain America, he’s remained a significant presence in numerous films and TV shows. Marvel has cleverly worked around limitations with Universal’s rights by weaving elements of classic Hulk comic book storylines into other movies.

A new Hulk movie could still be a good idea. Giving Hulk his own film would let filmmakers really explore his personality and story – something they can’t do as well when he’s part of the Avengers or appearing in another hero’s movie. The recent introduction of Bruce Banner’s son, Skaar, in *She-Hulk*, is a big development that deserves attention. With so many storylines in the current Marvel Saga left unfinished, it would be great to see Skaar become a fully developed character. A solo Hulk film could focus on Bruce’s relationship with his son and give him fresh challenges to overcome.

While a new Hulk movie sounds exciting, it might not happen. The current storyline in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, called the Multiverse Saga, is ending with *Avengers: Doomsday* and *Avengers: Secret Wars*. After these films, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige plans to start fresh with a new direction, and it’s unclear who will return. The X-Men are expected to be the focus of the next chapter, and some established heroes might have their stories conclude in *Doomsday* and *Secret Wars*. Mark Ruffalo, who plays Hulk, hasn’t been officially confirmed for those *Avengers* movies, but it would be surprising if he didn’t participate in the battle against Doctor Doom, given how important his character is.
