Although *Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle* is expected to remain the year’s most popular anime film, *Chainsaw Man: The Movie – The Reze Arc* is about to arrive in North America and promises an explosive battle between Denji and the Bomb Devil. Even before its U.S. release, the movie has already achieved a significant feat by surpassing one of Studio Ghibli’s biggest hits, demonstrating the immense popularity of the *Chainsaw Man* series.
While *Chainsaw Man: The Reze Arc* hasn’t yet surpassed *The Boy and the Heron* in global box office numbers, it has become a hit in South Korea, exceeding the earnings of Hayao Miyazaki’s Academy Award-winning film. *The Boy and the Heron* made just under $15 million USD in South Korea, but the new *Chainsaw Man* movie quickly surpassed that since its release. Though it still has a ways to go to match *The Boy and the Heron’s* total worldwide earnings of nearly $300 million, *Chainsaw Man* is showing strong potential.
Chainsaw Man Is In The Black
It’s incredibly difficult for any anime film to outperform a Studio Ghibli movie, but *Chainsaw Man The Movie: The Reze Arc* has already achieved a major success. According to MAPPA animator Shinsaku Kozuma, the film earned back its entire production budget within its first week, even before its release in Western countries. He called this an unprecedented accomplishment for an anime studio, noting that strong merchandise sales were a key factor. In fact, he suggested its success might even compare to the legendary popularity of *Final Fantasy VII*. While *Final Fantasy* is a video game, not a movie, the comparison highlights just how impressive the film’s performance has been.
If you need a quick recap before seeing the movie, *Chainsaw Man The Movie* picks up right after the end of season one. Denji is working for Makima and living with his friends Aki and Power, battling devils and trying to achieve his simple goals. However, his plans are complicated by the arrival of a new character, Reze, who creates a complicated love triangle between her, Denji, and Makima. As a dangerous new threat, the Bomb Devil, emerges, Denji is forced to make a difficult choice. Like the first season, the movie promises intense action and exciting battles that are sure to impress. *Chainsaw Man The Movie*, animated by MAPPA, will be released in North American theaters on October 24th.
