Sony recently released an updated PS5 Pro, replacing the original model with some improvements. The PS5 Pro cost $700 when it first came out in 2024, which was already a significant investment. Now, in 2025, the console costs $750, and with the current economic climate, the price could even go up again. Despite the $50 price increase, the new PS5 Pro offers a modest upgrade over the initial release.
The newest version of the console, model 7121, includes some hardware updates. It’s about 100 grams lighter than the older version, which is typical as consoles are often refined during manufacturing. While this weight difference isn’t a big deal for players, it helps Sony save money on shipping.
More Upgrades
The new PS5 Pro is lighter and more efficient thanks to a redesigned power supply. This helps keep the console cool while using less energy, potentially lowering your electricity bill. A new plastic fan, replacing the older metal one, makes the console significantly quieter and produces a deeper, more pleasant sound.
These improvements don’t really make the $50 price hike worthwhile, and Sony isn’t even claiming they will. They’ve been completely silent about these changes, so it was up to those who take the console apart to discover them. Ultimately, the PS5 Pro doesn’t seem to justify its cost, especially now that the price has gone up.
If you’re thinking about buying a PS5 Pro but haven’t yet, Sony is offering three months of PlayStation Plus Premium as an incentive. While this is worth around $54 and partially offsets the $50 price increase, it likely won’t convince those who are hesitant about upgrading.
