While some comic book movies still do well, the genre is becoming increasingly unpredictable. Unless a film is a major event like an Avengers movie or *Spider-Man: No Way Home*, many viewers are happy to wait and stream it instead. This has led Hollywood to look to video games for new material, and shows like *The Last of Us* and *Fallout* have demonstrated that these adaptations can be both popular with critics and financially successful.
Lots of video games being made into movies or shows have been stuck in development for years – like the planned adaptation of *Sleeping Dogs*. *Uncharted*, *The Last of Us*, and *Minecraft* all faced lengthy and complicated production processes, with changes in writers and directors along the way. Fortunately, the recent success of video game adaptations has given a boost to some of these long-delayed projects. For example, a *Sleeping Dogs* movie starring Donnie Yen was initially planned for 2017, but ultimately didn’t happen.
Sleeping Dogs Movie Script Is Complete, Confirms Simu Liu
Earlier this year, actor Simu Liu said he’d like to make a movie based on the action game *Sleeping Dogs*. The game is set in Hong Kong and puts you in the role of Wei Shen, a police officer working undercover to take down a dangerous criminal organization. The story is complex and explores moral gray areas. *Sleeping Dogs* is known for its exciting gameplay, which includes intense martial arts fights, shooting, and thrilling car chases – players can even jump between moving vehicles!
Many fans consider *Sleeping Dogs* to be a standout game similar to *Grand Theft Auto*, and they’ve been disappointed that a sequel hasn’t been made. But now, Simu Liu is working to change that. A *Sleeping Dogs* movie has been in the works for 2025, and Liu recently shared a completed script page online. While the script is still a draft and likely to be revised, it’s a hopeful sign that a new installment in the franchise could happen.

Currently, no studio has officially greenlit a *Sleeping Dogs* movie, but that could be about to change. Simu Liu and the film’s producers are likely pitching the project to different studios to find a partner. With Liu starring in *Avengers: Doomsday* next year, his rising popularity should make studios more interested in the project, potentially allowing it to move forward after the next two Avengers films are released.
