I’ve been watching the animation industry grow, and MAPPA is a studio that really stands out. Founded in 2011, they’ve quickly become a major player, thanks to hits like *Jujutsu Kaisen* and *Chainsaw Man*. But I think *Yuri!!! on Ice* was the show that truly put them on the map. 2016 was a big year for them, and after that, they released other popular series like *Banana Fish*. *Yuri!!! on Ice* gained a huge and dedicated fanbase, and everyone was excited when they hinted at continuing the story. The series originally aired from October to December 2016, and it really left viewers wanting more.
Because the anime wasn’t based on an existing story, fans were eager to see what would happen next with ice skaters Yuri Katsuki and Victor Nikiforov, particularly after Victor chose to become a coach. A film showing Victor’s earlier skating career was in development and even had a trailer released, but sadly, it was officially cancelled by MAPPA last year. With the anime now over nine years old, the news means we likely won’t learn any more about Yuri and Victor’s story, which is a little disappointing.
There May Never Be Another Anime Like Yuri!!! on Ice
This anime truly had everything: smooth animation, a captivating soundtrack, well-developed characters, and positive LGBTQ+ representation. It wasn’t just about the ice skating; all these elements combined to create something special. The story follows Yuri, a dedicated skater who battles self-doubt and rediscovers his love for the sport after meeting his idol, Victor – a five-time world champion. Victor saw potential in Yuri that others missed, and surprisingly, he put his own career on hold to coach him for a year.
The series introduces several skilled skaters with dreams as big as Yuri’s, all competing to be the best. As Yuri and Victor train, their connection deepens into something more, though the story isn’t primarily about their romance. They bond over their shared love of skating and gradually fall in love, feeling like a perfect match. Their relationship develops beautifully, symbolized by matching rings and plans for a future together, and it feels both natural and heartwarming, making you want to see them succeed.
Yuri!!! on Ice’s Ending Leaves Room For the Story to Grow
Initially, Victor was only supposed to coach Yuri for a year before making his comeback. Yuri felt guilty since he believed he was holding Victor back from his booming career, even though the decision was entirely the latter’s. However, by the anime’s ending, Yuri barely missed the gold medal and won silver instead, which wasn’t his goal at all. Instead of beating himself up over it, he requested Victor to keep being his coach for another year, which represented his significant growth compared to the first episode. On the other hand, Victor didn’t hide his happiness and instead swore to keep coaching for the next five years so Yuri could win as many gold medals as he did.
With the anime nearing its conclusion, we witness Victor return to the ice and perform alongside Yuri. This suggests their final performance is just around the corner. The story ends with Yuri encountering both Victor and Yuri Plisetsky, who actually won the Grand Prix Finale with a higher score than him. While the ending felt incomplete – we were hoping to see Yuri win gold and witness more of Victor’s comeback – it seems their story won’t continue any further.
Yuri!!! on Ice the movie: Ice Adolescence Could’ve Given More Depth to Victor’s Character
Victor’s rise to become a five-time gold medalist by age 27 was truly remarkable, captivating audiences worldwide and reaching a level of success few athletes achieve. However, reaching the peak of his career also meant he’d accomplished almost everything he set out to do, and his initial love for ice skating began to diminish. He used to thrive on the thrill of surprising people with innovative moves, but eventually, audiences anticipated something extraordinary from him with every performance, making genuine surprise difficult to achieve.
After seeing Yuri’s incredibly popular video of him mimicking Victor’s skating performance, Victor felt inspired to change his career path. He decided to take a year off from competing and focus on coaching. However, the story mainly followed Yuri’s development, leaving Victor’s character somewhat underdeveloped. He largely served as a coach, idol, and partner to Yuri, but his own complexities weren’t fully explored. A movie focused on Victor would have been a great way to delve deeper into his perspective and understand him beyond how others saw him.
