As a huge gamer, it’s just so weird to me that we haven’t gotten a *Bully 2* yet. Usually, if a game does well and people love it, the studio quickly makes a sequel. And with *Bully*, fans have been begging for one for years! Rockstar clearly knows how to make successful sequels – look at *Grand Theft Auto* – so it’s baffling why they haven’t revisited *Bully*. I really think a new *Bully* game would be a massive hit, but they just keep putting it off.
Bully is One of Rockstar’s Best Games

Rockstar Games has become a leading game developer over the past few decades. They consistently release incredibly successful games – numbers that most development teams can only hope to achieve. For example, Grand Theft Auto V is one of the best-selling video games ever, and Red Dead Redemption 2 received numerous ‘Game of the Year’ awards.
Released in 2006, *Bully* might not compete with today’s games, but it remains a standout title from Rockstar. Players take on the role of Jimmy Hopkins as he navigates life at Bullworth Academy. For those unfamiliar, it’s a fun blend of the *GTA* formula and the school setting of *Harry Potter*, but without the magic – a perfect combination for its time.
I still remember when *Bully* first came out! Critics really loved it – it got an 87 on Metacritic, which is awesome. It sold over 1.5 million copies too, which is pretty great, especially considering it was a brand new game. Now, it didn’t sell *as* much as something like *GTA V* (nothing really does!), but it did really well considering all the controversy around it before release. Some people jumped to conclusions about what the game was about, but it clearly didn’t stop people from checking it out!
Rockstar hasn’t created a sequel to *Bully*, even though fans have repeatedly asked for one. While they did release a remastered version of the original game, that’s not the new game fans are hoping for.
Bully‘s Cancelled Sequel

Although Rockstar Games never released *Bully 2*, they did begin development on it. Reports suggest a sequel was approved in the late 2000s, with a team of 50 to 80 people working on it. The game world was planned to be about the same size as *Grand Theft Auto: Vice City*, and it would have featured new systems to give players more control over the story’s direction.
By 2009, the team at Rockstar New England had created a playable demo of *Bully 2* with around eight hours of gameplay. They estimated the full game was about three years away from completion, but layoffs at the studio ultimately canceled the project.
In 2011, Dan Houser, a leader at Rockstar Games, mentioned they were thinking about making another *Bully* game. He confirmed in 2013 that he had ideas for *Bully 2*, but there was no official announcement. Years later, in 2017, some early designs for a sequel appeared online, but still, no new game was confirmed.
We haven’t received any updates about a sequel to *Bully* since then. After leaving Rockstar, Dan Houser explained the cancellation by saying the company simply didn’t have enough resources available to complete it.
Now that Dan Houser, a key writer on the original *Bully*, has left Rockstar Games, it’s uncertain whether a sequel will ever happen. While many people contributed to the first game’s success, Houser was a strong advocate for *Bully*, and it might be difficult to convince Rockstar to make another one without his support.
Rockstar Games has significantly reduced the frequency of its game releases over the past ten years. While they used to release a new game almost annually, as they did with *Bully* in 2006, now fans are fortunate to see a new title every five years. The company is aware that their biggest profits come from large-scale multiplayer games, and the single-player, private school setting of *Bully* doesn’t align with that focus.
Look, I really want a *Bully 2*, and I know I’m not alone – we’ve been asking for it for almost twenty years! It doesn’t seem like Rockstar is going to make it themselves, though. They know the first game is still super popular, but I’m guessing they might let another studio take the lead on a sequel. Honestly, it’s just a hunch, but Rockstar’s main team usually works on huge games, and *Bully 2* feels like it would be a smaller project for them, unless something major changes.
