Okay, so things are seriously escalating in the Marvel universe! At the end of the *Fantastic Four* movie, Doctor Doom actually connects with Franklin Richards – and honestly, that kid is potentially the *most* powerful being we’ve seen yet. Whether Doom tries to kidnap him or exploit his abilities, it’s going to be a disaster for everything, everywhere. That’s why the Fantastic Four are heading to our Earth – Earth-616 – hoping to team up with some heroes who actually care about saving people. There *are* heroes around, thankfully, but the timing of Doom’s move couldn’t be worse. It feels like everything is about to hit the fan!
The New Avengers and Captain America are currently estranged, with Captain America planning to assemble his own team. The X-Men are exploring the multiverse and could potentially help fight Doom, but their involvement is uncertain. It would be more helpful if Earth’s heroes reached out to the MCU’s strongest team for assistance. However, it appears that team will likely remain neutral during the upcoming Doomsday events.
The Best MCU Team Is Sitting Out the Fight Against Doctor Doom
The Avengers were the first big team assembled in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and with good reason – Nick Fury understood the need to protect Earth. But Earth isn’t the only planet facing danger. Many worlds throughout the galaxy could benefit from a team of heroes. Instead, they get the Guardians of the Galaxy, a quirky but ultimately heroic group dedicated to doing what’s right. Beginning with their fight against Ronan the Accuser, the Guardians have consistently worked to keep the galaxy safe from threats.
Though they come from vastly different worlds, the Guardians of the Galaxy feel like a true family, connected by shared hardships and hopes. Working together doesn’t feel like a job for them – whether it’s Peter Quill and Gamora fighting villains or Rocket and Groot inventing something new, they genuinely enjoy each other’s company. This strong family bond sets them apart from a team like the Avengers, who often clash and only unite when they have to. Even the new Guardians team assembled in the latest movie feels more natural and cohesive than some previous Avengers lineups. It’s a shame, though, that they’ll likely be sidelined for a while before getting another major opportunity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Are Waiting for the Next James Gunn
James Gunn directed all three *Guardians of the Galaxy* films, and his skill at creating emotionally resonant stories is what truly made the team special and relatable. However, Gunn has moved on to co-lead DC Studios and build a competing franchise, leaving a big gap at Marvel. While it would be simple to give the next *Guardians* movie to a new director, that’s a significant gamble, particularly given the current challenges facing the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel seems to be prioritizing safe bets, and without Gunn’s unique touch, it’s unclear whether another *Guardians* film could succeed.
It’s possible Rocket and his team could still show up in either *Doomsday* or *Avengers: Secret Wars*. If Doctor Doom succeeds, there won’t be a galaxy left to protect, after all. But simply adding them to the story without developing their roles wouldn’t be helpful, given how many characters are already involved. A better approach would be to focus on finding someone who can lead the *Guardians* into a new direction – building on James Gunn’s work while also forging their own path.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
