The fight against Vecna in Hawkins isn’t finished yet. Before the show returns next month, co-creator Matt Duffer hinted at how the villain has changed since Season 4, leading into Season 5.
In a recent interview with Empire, the Duffer brothers revealed that the villain from *Stranger Things* has become even more powerful for the final season. They’ve nicknamed him “Vecna 2.0” because he’s evolved and can now use his abilities in the real world, not just the Upside Down. According to the Duffers, Vecna is now significantly stronger and more frightening, capable of physically attacking people in a brutal way – they compared him to Freddy Krueger, but even more intense.
Jamie Campbell Bower, who plays Vecna, explained that Vecna wasn’t always a monster. He started as a human child who felt like an outsider and was deeply lonely—a sad boy who just wanted someone to care for him. While he can’t reveal too much about Season 5, Bower hinted that Vecna’s actions stemmed from the pain he experienced and a desire to create a world he believed would be better.
Vecna Is Tied to Freddy Krueger in More Ways Than One
The link between Vecna and his victims isn’t just about psychological manipulation. As pointed out by Bower, Vecna was formerly known as Henry Creel, a boy who developed telepathic abilities after his family relocated to Hawkins. In Season 4 of Stranger Things, Victor Creel, Henry’s father, was played by Robert Englund – famously known as the original Freddy Krueger. Englund starred as Freddy in all eight A Nightmare on Elm Street films, and also in the television series, Freddy’s Nightmares.
The final season of *Stranger Things* will feature many returning cast members, including Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Noah Schnapp, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Cara Buono, Joe Keery, Sadie Sink, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, and Brett Gelman. New to the cast this season are Nell Fisher, Jake Connelly, Alex Breaux, and Linda Hamilton, known for her role as Sarah Connor in *Terminator*. Fans will also be pleased to see the return of Barb!
The last chapter of Stranger Things will take place in the fall of 1987. “
Stranger Things fans can currently binge the first four seasons on Netflix, ahead of the .
