In New Mutants #100, Cable announced it was time for the team to mature and take a bigger role in protecting mutants. He disbanded the New Mutants and relaunched them as X-Force, a more radical team comprised of former members and some new recruits. X-Force quickly became a vigilante group focused on eliminating threats proactively, often using violence the X-Men wouldn’t condone. They gained a reputation as mutant terrorists, believing their extreme methods were necessary. Though the original team eventually split, future versions of X-Force emerged, positioning themselves as a counter-terrorism unit that also relied on lethal force to neutralize dangers.
The X-Force team had changed significantly from their days as the New Mutants. They were now experienced and ruthless mercenaries, composed of some of the most powerful and dangerous mutant heroes around.
10) Rictor
Rictor grew up with a father who illegally sold guns, and witnessed his father’s death at the hands of Stryfe, a clone of Cable. When his mutant powers first appeared, they caused massive destruction, leveling three city blocks. This led to his capture and torture by The Right, an anti-mutant organization, who attempted to manipulate him into destroying San Francisco by falsely claiming he was affiliated with X-Factor.
Fortunately, X-Factor rescued Rictor and offered him a training position. He later became part of the New Mutants, and remained with the team when it evolved into X-Force. Rictor has the power to control the earth around him – everything from plants and lava to seismic activity – and can even trigger eruptions. He struggles with suicidal tendencies and frequently puts himself in danger while fighting criminals.
9) Warpath
James Proudstar, also known as Warpath, is the brother of John Proudstar, the superhero Thunderbird. Sadly, Thunderbird was the first member of the reformed X-Men to die – the team had recently added new members like Wolverine and Storm. Blaming the X-Men for his brother’s death, James vowed to avenge Thunderbird by killing Professor X.
I first saw this guy really come into his own when his mutant abilities kicked in – he fell in with Emma Frost’s Hellions, and it was clear he was driven by revenge. Eventually, he managed to get past a lot of that rage and moved on, joining the New Mutants and then X-Force. He took on the name Warpath, and honestly, he was still the angriest guy on the team, always ready to go all-out when things got tough. Later on, he even ended up working with Wolverine’s new X-Force team, dealing with some serious counter-terrorism stuff.
8) Bishop
Bishop comes from a dark future where a mutant named Hope Summers, believed to be a savior, accidentally caused the deaths of a million people. This led governments to build powerful robots called Sentinels and imprison all mutants. Bishop escaped to the past, joining forces with the X-Men, his childhood heroes. However, when Hope was born again, Bishop turned against the X-Men, determined to prevent the future he knew by killing her.
Despite once being a fierce enemy of X-Force, he eventually joined the team led by Storm after Cable shielded Hope. Having previously worked as a mutant law enforcement officer from the future, he’s a skilled strategist and, as demonstrated by his dedication to protecting Hope, he’s willing to do whatever it takes – even use deadly force – to safeguard the world.
7) Domino
Domino first appeared to be a member of Cable’s New Mutants team, but it was actually a villain named Copycat pretending to be her. Once Cable formed the X-Force team and recruited the real Domino, she became a consistent member in various versions of the team. Earlier in her life, Domino was involved in Project Armageddon, a government initiative to create the ultimate soldier.
Though her mutant ability was simply good luck, many dismissed her. However, her luck actually enhances her already impressive skills. She’s a highly skilled mercenary, and her powers ensure she nearly always succeeds in her missions. Because of this, she earned the nickname ‘The Perfect Weapon’ and continued to be a valuable team member, later serving alongside Wolverine as the leader.
6) Psylocke
Psylocke’s backstory is quite complex. Originally, the character was formed by merging the identities of two separate heroes: Kwannon, a Japanese mercenary, and Betsy Braddock, Captain Britain’s sister. Currently, Kwannon is the primary Psylocke, while Betsy Braddock now operates as Captain Britain. Interestingly, when Psylocke first joined the X-Men, she was under the impression that she was Betsy Braddock.
Following a split from her previous group, Psylocke joined various teams like the X-Men, Hellions, and X-Force. She’s a powerful telepath and can manifest psychic blades, known as Psychik Knives, which she uses to incapacitate or even kill opponents. As a child, she received extensive sword training from the Hand, making her a highly skilled and ruthless fighter.
5) Cable
Cable created the X-Force team. He’s the future son of Cyclops, sent forward in time as an infant to be saved, and returned as a highly skilled and dangerous adult. Initially, he led the New Mutants, but he eventually disbanded that team and reformed it as X-Force, transforming them into a proactive counter-terrorism unit focused on preventing future catastrophes.
This also created conflict with the X-Men and X-Factor, particularly after Cable’s clone, Stryfe, attempted to kill Professor X. Cable possesses strong telepathic abilities, and his unique cybernetic body lets him use powerful weapons and technology. He’s prepared to use lethal force if he believes it’s necessary to protect the world.
4) Deadpool
Despite his comedic nature, Deadpool is actually one of Marvel’s most dangerous mercenaries. He’s known for making jokes, but he’s a lethal killer who doesn’t hesitate to eliminate anyone. He first appeared as a villain targeting Cable and the X-Force, but eventually developed a complicated relationship with them, even becoming a member of the team multiple times.
Don’t let the movies fool you – in the comics, Deadpool isn’t actually a mutant. He gained his incredible healing powers through the Weapon X program, receiving a blood transfusion from Wolverine. Even though he’s not a mutant himself, he frequently teams up with X-Force and Wolverine, though they don’t always appreciate his help.
3) X-23
Laura Kinney, also known as X-23, Wolverine, and Talon, is a clone of Wolverine, which hints at her difficult past. She was created in a lab and subjected to intense training and abuse to become a highly skilled assassin. Though she initially resented Wolverine, she later forgave him when she realized he wasn’t involved in her creation and ultimately became a hero.
Since then, she’s joined teams like the X-Men and X-Force. She’s just as dangerous as Wolverine, but generally has fewer issues with taking lives. She shares his abilities and, because she was trained as an assassin from a young age, she’s skilled at delivering the harsh justice X-Force often requires.
2) Fantomex
Fantomex gained his abilities through the Weapon Plus program, specifically as a creation of Weapon XIII. He was designed as a test model for a new, more advanced type of Super Sentinel. What makes Fantomex truly unique is his unusual parentage – his mother was human, and his father was a machine.
Originally, he possessed three brains, making him an incredibly lethal and intelligent assassin. Now, he can only access one brain, but remains highly skilled and able to successfully complete any assignment.
1) Wolverine
Wolverine recently took charge of X-Force, a team Cyclops assembled for missions the main X-Men couldn’t – or wouldn’t – handle. Logan was a natural fit, having more combat experience and a higher kill count than almost anyone else in the X-Men, and he’s comfortable leading a team willing to do what’s necessary. Despite his violent past, Wolverine also serves as the team’s conscience, understanding when restraint is the wiser course of action.
