No one was going to rain on Lea Michele’s parade.
Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE this! She actually told the story of how she landed her Broadway debut when she was just eight years old! She basically made it happen all by herself – it’s the most amazing thing ever!
Lea recently shared in an interview with Elle that a friend of hers was planning to audition for the Broadway show Les Misérables. However, the night before the audition, her friend’s father suffered a heart attack. Her mother then asked Lea’s mother to take her friend in her place, saying, ‘Please, you have to take her to the audition.’
Even though things were incredibly difficult, the woman, now 39, spotted a chance to make something happen. Her parents didn’t know about her skills at the time.
Lea explained that when she heard someone else was trying out, she decided to try as well. She said, ‘If she’s going, I want to go too!’ Her parents initially protested, telling her she couldn’t sing, but Lea hadn’t sung before, so they didn’t know what she was capable of.
She added, “I practiced in my room a song. I sang ‘Angel of Music’ from Phantom of the Opera.”
The actress from Spring Awakening, who has two children – 5-year-old Ever Leo and 14-month-old Emery Sol – with her husband, Zandy Reich, said the casting directors seemed impressed with her during the open audition.
She recalled leaving the audition when someone asked her mother, ‘Who is she? Does she have representation?’ She hadn’t even had a professional headshot taken yet. Leaving the building, she told her mom she felt confident about getting the part, but her mom cautioned her, saying, ‘Things like this just don’t happen to people like us.’
But, it did happen for Lea, who added, “Two weeks later, I was performing on Broadway.”
The actress known for Funny Girl will return to Broadway in Chess, marking her sixth time on the stage. Interestingly, she’ll be performing in the same theater where she previously starred in Les Misérables.
Lea expressed deep gratitude, saying she felt completely content and like she was exactly where she belonged. She couldn’t picture herself anywhere else right now.
As for how her childhood friend has fared since that 1995 audition?
“She’s OK,” Lea shared through laughter, noting the two are still friends. “She’s good.”
Read on for a look back at Lea’s life over the years, including her romance with husband Zandy.
People started speculating about a romantic connection between the actress and the retail businessman in July 2017. A source confirmed to TopMob News that they had been friends for some time and recently began dating.
On the red carpet at the 2017 Emmys, Lea told TopMob News that she believes her new boyfriend is “The One,” a sentiment echoed by Glee creator Ryan Murphy.
Ryan feels like family to me – he’s one of my closest friends. So when he gave my boyfriend his approval, that meant everything. Honestly, it mattered more to me than my parents’ or other friends’ opinions – Ryan’s approval was the ultimate sign that my boyfriend was okay with him.
In April 2018, Zandy proposed to Lea with a 4-carat diamond ring. According to a source at TopMob News, the couple were overjoyed.
In 2019, Lea wished her husband, Z, a Happy Valentine’s Day with a simple and loving message: “I love you!”
In February 2019, Lea celebrated her upcoming wedding with a memorable bachelorette party in Hawaii, joined by her close friends Emma Roberts, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, and JoAnna Garcia Swisher.
Lea and Zandy married on March 9, 2019, in Napa Valley, California. Lea wore a stunning Monique Lhuillier wedding gown. “We’re thrilled to be married and thankful to have our loved ones with us,” they shared with People magazine. “We’re so happy to begin the rest of our lives together.”
The newly married couple is currently enjoying a honeymoon in a tropical location. According to a source, they spent the first month of their marriage reminiscing about the wedding, looking through photos and videos, and expressing their gratitude to everyone who helped make it special. They described the entire weekend as magical and unforgettable.
Zandy and Lea were first seen as a married couple at the GLAAD Media Awards in March 2019.
“My forever valentine,” she writes on Instagram in Feb. 2020. “love you z.”
TopMob News has learned that Lea, age 33, is pregnant and expecting her first child with her partner. The news was confirmed in April 2020.
